New L-Shaped Kitchen Help

Here's the basic layout of my new house. The L-Shape is about 21'x8 on the walls'. Was shooting for a 8'-9' island (picture is 6').

Family of 4; two boys - 1 & 3. Forever house (barring lottery win or misfortune).

We shop on Sat/Sun. Cook Sat/Sun night. Sunday is a meal prep day, lunches, chicken, veggies. Wed/Thurs will cook another meal.

Lots of leftovers/lots of reheating. Both my wife & I work. Best layout? Will post this in Appliances for help too! Thanks!

FYI for those looking - OP discussed considering a steam oven and liked the idea of a separate frig/freezer set up. OP -- would you consider a longer island and extending the kitchen guts along the family room wall? Also, have you considered switching the eating area and kitchen?

For me with a quick look, I would want to consider a configuration with the frig where the stove is, a longer island with clean up and prep area, and the stove along wall where the sink is currently. I would actually wonder what it would look like if the opening at the stairs could be switched with the pantry and the frig placed there....Then it could be a sort of U. I would also want better access from the kitchen to the deck from the kitchen, but the potty there makes that a challenge.

I had considered extending the guts along the family room wall and a bigger island (was thinking 8 or 9 feet). The empty wall is about 4.5'. I am open to that.

I hadn't considered the other moves. The hallway and half bath are there to keep messes at bay. Also, the plan is to put an in ground pool out there near the deck (which would actually be a raised patio). I liked having the potty mud area in that hall.

If you moved the door to the garage forward, you could have a longer run on the cooking wall, even have the fridge next to the range.

Is the dining room on the right, next to the garage? Swapping its opening to the kitchen would allow easy passage from DR to deck, which might be nice when you entertain. But, you may like being able to see from the cooking zone out through the DR window to the front of the house.

To the right (next to garage), is the living room (aka kids playroom). Below the Eat In is the dining room.

I like the fridge location where it is--closer to the eating/dining areas, and closer to the family room. If you switch it with the range, the DW should also be switched to the other side of the sink, and that won't leave much space to stand in the corner. The only reason I'd consider switching appliances is if you were doing a peninsula on the blank wall, which would also put the range/cooktop in a more protected spot, and give you an option to prep facing the eating area (and maybe the DW could stay to the left of the sink):

If you have ap. 12'9" available (13'9" minus the [12"?] stairs bump-out), you'll have only 38" behind a 42" deep island and 48" work aisle. Decrease the work aisle to 42", and you'll have 44" behind the island seating. If the basement stairs door opens 30", that's only 14" for one of the island seats.

I love my island, and have narrower than recommended aisles (also have DW between the sink and range), so it depends on how you want to use the kitchen.
