Problem child

I'm trying to root a Miami Rose cutting, it was calloused when I got it, but the stalk was a little wrinkly and soft at the bottom. I rolled the dice and cut the bottom, but I didn't think it had enough time to callous again, so I rootoned it and planted it. I'm using fabric pots, really good soil, it's been plenty hot, and it gets set on the concrete sidewalk during the day. It's been a little over a month, recently I noticed the wrinkles and softness coming back :( Pulled it today, no sign of roots, seemed to be rotting a bit on the end.

So....I just cut another 1/2" off. The cutting is only about 6" long at this point. What to do? Plant it again, or let it callous, and hope it doesn't croak in the meantime? I got a clear plastic bottle for rooting it this time. Opinions?
