I see red plates in the future glass cabinet so this could be your accent color and for the paint I see that your kitchen flows with the living room that's gonna be a be a big impact on your decision

What colors do you have in the adjacent space? Is red a color you would consider using in kitchen accessories and adding to the adjacent room? Are you considering putting up a backsplash? All of these should be coordinated.

The living room has mostly brown. The table you can't see in this pic is a dark wood with high back chairs. I like the colors olive/sage greens, I like the purple family of colors. But my son tells me my thoughts are outdated. The red dishes don't have to be an issue, and I'm going to add more to the kitchen in wood moldings and lighting, I"m also replacing the floors and counters. I am putting up a backsplash as well lidadesigneye, I'd like color ideas for all, backsplash, wall paint, kitchen decor etc.

Sage green never goes out of style - it is a neutral and will work beautifully with your red accents that I hope you will keep. Paint the back of the cabinet with the new glass doors the same as your wall color for an extra dose of charm. Dottie - I love the new vinyl wood floor planks - they look very real and wear like iron.
I want to recommend that you do the upper bar top in a different material than the counters - use a wood butcher block to echo the floor tones and add even more "old is new again" charm. IKEA sells these in a standard size that you can cut down and sand off to fit for a really good price. Then, I'd try to echo the floor tone with an earth tone countertop on your freshly painted cabinets - I don't know if you are looking for stone or quartz or formica but something neutral and mid-tone in any of these will work well as a contrast to your light cabinets. Let's echo the cabinets though on the backsplash with a simple bright biscuit toned ceramic backsplash all the way to the top cabinets - I think I'd advance the traditional style with a penny round profile. Again - this is another rediscovery of a classic tile shape - so it is classic. If your son saw this combination he would not think "old ideas," he would think - wow!

Here's the only other thing to check out. Can you take a look at your local big box store and see if they have upper kitchen cabinets the same depth as your upper cabinets but at half height? The doors don't have to match so long as they have an outside frame - there is a charming scheme I have in mind to make your kitchen look really custom. Measure the height above your existing cabinets and the width of the cabinets below on the horseshoe before you go to see what there is. You are pricing out something for over a refrigerator / like you have over your hood/microwave?

If you added short cabinets over your existing cabinets, your kitchen would have a lot more storage (albeit out of the way) the proportions of your kitchen would be even more charming. You buy the inexpensive big box upper cabinets. If your husband is handy you have him cut out the front so only the frame remains. Use chicken wire, and staple it to the inside of the frame. You paint the outsides cream just like your cabinets. You paint the sides inside cream like your cabinets, but the back would be the green wall color. These would install just around the top of the horseshoe area in your kitchen and then you add crown molding in the trim / cabinet color to the ceiling (so they can be as much as 6" shorter than the gap between your top of cabinets and ceiling).

I dont' know if you need more cabinets (but who doesn't) but this gives a decorative place to store platters and cake plates and things you might forget you have if they are not on display. Make sure something up there has a touch of red, and the rest of the things can just be white and functional and they will be gorgeous.

Consider the next time you buy a countertop appliance like a blender or a toaster, to buy them in enamel red.

Wow, I just checked in today. what wonderful advice. I'm going to re-read these two postings. I want to try to attach a few new images. My son put crown on top of the cabinets and we went with a more sage green. The counter tops are coming in a few weeks, granite, san seria? I like the idea of changing up the upper counter and the flooring. I'm having a hard time seeing the pic, i hope this is the most recent

With this dark of paint , do you still think I should paint the inside of the cabinet

I thought this pic would have shown my side cabinets. on the outside of all cabinets , I put up wainscoating , I may have a side rounded shelf built for the upper outside cabinet, for decor. obviously would like a new stove, but it's out of budget
