Gill, I am really surprised with their progress so far, better than I expected. I am now starting all my seeds in the all grit mix, no breakdown, plenty of air circulation and less transplant shock when repotting or potting up. With this mixture I fertilize with every watering.

What are your temps like in your part of the US? Here in Middle England we are not known for long hot summers. It's been low 20'sC today and yesterday, last night it dropped to 10C. It's the meteorological start of Autumn on Sept 1st, so unless we have what we term an 'Indian summer' it can be downhill from now on! Do yo use supplemental heat or light? I just use a regular lamp during the evenings.

I've never used the gritty mix for germinating or for the first couple of pottings on, just general purpose soil and perlite, keeping it on the wet side.

Gill, I started these seeds indoors, using a covered seed tray and a heat mat. I have a grow room in the basement and now the temps range from 74F at night to 84F during the day. The light (1000W MH HID lamp) is now on 14 hrs. and I will be adjusting for less time due to shorter days. I am new to Adeniums, bought my first on 6-12-16 and the same day ordered seeds. With my set up I will keep the plants growing all winer.

These seedlings were placed outside on 7-25-16. Temps have been above normal this year, with more than average days in the 90'sF. The average is 70F-85F for summer. Sept. 1st is also the start of meteorological autumn here.

When
I first started growing adenium, I read that growing year-round is
much better for the plant because dormant plants are more susceptible
to disease, insects, or rot than a plant actively growing.

Since
reading that, I have tried to keep mine growing constantly, although
I failed at that last winter. I lifted my lights, and had to remove
half of the setup for a few days, and they mostly all went dormant.
