Picked the last of the Norkent, do you have apple maggots? Here it's getting worse by the year!

Noret is a small crabapple, supposedly a lot like Trailman. Very good for eating.

No apple maggots here. Maybe they don't like the varieties I grow?

The only apples I had this year were Fall Red. I don't actually like them as much when they are fully ripe, I pick them when they are still a bit tart.

I'm not having trouble with maggots, but as soon as the apples started turning red, some of the birds went after them! So a lot of the apples were ruined.

I am not sure what an apple maggot looks like? so probably not. Although I picked off a leaf a few weeks ago that had the underside loaded with small half inch larvae looking like they were just hatching. Squished them under my shoe before I thought to take a picture. I have never seen these before.

Apple maggot flies emerge in spring from the overwintering larva in the ground starting the cycle again, laying eggs in apples when small..around July. One can see tunnels in apples at harvest time or small little brown spots which I see now in some apples. Some people bag apples or spry.apple maggot

I did see a few of those but I didn't inspect them closer, maybe I ate them!!!!

BTW I have no need to wonder when to pick my Sweet 16. I left it one day too long, went to get it but something already did, it was no where to be found.

Here, deer, raccoons, and sometimes squirrels can beat us to our apples. The worst is bears. I haven't had them here, but they really did damage to my neighbor's apple trees.

Ha..tonight I was going to pick that one Krazulya pear and was gone too, squirrels are the worst...have another Krazulya pear on another tree and hope it will be still there tomorrow to take a picture...was too dark. No problem eating apples with a little brown spots...I've never seen the actual larva..so then I'm OK...if you have, then just close your eyes lol.

How do you like that Krazulya pear? I was reading about some of those Siberian pears, and find them intriguing.

Still new in this and not many to taste..it also takes time to learn when to pick, obviously I picked this one too late because soft/mealy already. This one I think is one of the better ones when picked the right time.

There was two side by side but when I checked for firmness one fell off.

This larger one measures 2 - 1/2" across.

Those are beautiful pears Konrad, I can't keep up with all you grow and with every new picture my "need to grow" list gets longer :)

Ate my discovery apple today and it was incredible. Crisp, very juicy, and with a nice balance of sweet and sour. The flavour was at first bite like a pear, but then the tuti fruity kicked in. To date, hands down, the best apple I have ever grown.

Harvested my McIntosh apples today ... this box plus another 1/3 off my small tree. Hope I get more next year! Only problem was, the ants like them, too!

Which Mac..there are about 3 or 4 Mac type apples, the real McIntosh can't be grown in zone 3.

I had thought it was a real McIntosh. But I'm wondering if it could be a Hardi-Mac. When I put the tree in years ago, I wasn't necessarily keen on those distinctions. The tree is in a protected spot. It has suffered quite a bit of damage in some winters. One year, the entire central leader of the tree died from about five feet above the ground, and I had to cut it out. But the tree has rebounded nicely the past couple of years.

It could be Hardi Mac.

I tasted Mac Spur and Mac Phee today, pretty good but Norkent still taste better.

There is still a Fort Mac apple...I'll have to see tomorrow if someone has it.

I tasted the Wijcik columnar McIntosh today at the show...not any better then these two.
