Thanks gardengal, what confusing is that it doesn't fill out like my PGs

I have the same one in my backyard. Now I know the name of it. Thanks! It is quite fragrant I early August. Now, it is turning light green in color. I also have it dried I the previous year. Color turned into a yellowish brown when dried. They hold up wonderfully as dried plants.

The shape and density of the flowers look exactly like my Pinky Winky as do the reddish twigs. Is it in a spot that's unusually hot and retains heat such as near a brick wall or other paving? I know Luis says that sometimes in hot situations they don't develop great color.

Or what about it perhaps being Tardiva? It blooms late enough that it might not have time to turn color before frost browns it. The shape of the flower panicle and the size of the shrub would fit.

Edited to change PW to Pinky Winky

    We should watch our abbreviations

i read pw as peewee which is an oakleaf. I know that's not what was meant

pg is peegee the tall very late

paniculata? Remind me how it is different from tardiva if they aren't sometimes used interchangeably

obviously I'm still trying to keep my hydrates straight

i think of tardiva as the 10 foot tall almost tree like with paniculata pointed flowers trusses, white blooms last of all to bloom

Hi everyone , I think we all made mistakes with the lettering of hys...I also think Tardiva is the answer....Thank You

Marie, in this context PW refers to Pinky Winky, PG to PeeGee (or Grandiflora). There is a Pee Wee paniculata cultivar as well, although not particularly common. And Tardiva is quite distinct from PeeGee, although both are used frequently in the development of the tree-form hydrangeas.

hyed, you may be correct with your ID of it being Tardiva :-) According to Dirr: "'Tardiva' extends the flowering season into late August and September (even later further north). The inflorescences are a mixture of sterile and fertile flowers. Depending on weather conditions (cooler), the sepals turn pinkish." A hot and dry summer or a full sun location may impact any color change.

Gardengal, it has been a very hot and dry summer...in sun all day...Thank You

    Phantom' Hydrangea

    Hydrangea paniculata 'Phantom

Phantom has many more sterile flowers than the one hyed posted initially, and so Phantom looks more full than hyed's. Also, Hyed's is about 10 years old, and Phantom was intro'ed by a European breeder in 2007, so I doubt it's been in this country that long.

It's definitely not PeeGee. Could be Tardiva or Pink Diamond which get quite tall - 7-8 feet. It looks very much like my Pink Diamond. Some years they don't get very pink if the weather is hot and dry.

springwood thank you, if you look at the first photo at the top of the page, that's about as good as it gets.....bought as a QF tree I believe, many years ago..never really turns pink maybe a hint in Oct.

    Looks like QF to me.

My QF standard taken July 12.

starlight, I agree ,your photo and my closeup photo look alike....but. the picture I just took and the one at the very top of the page (taken last Sept.) have never shown any Pink, I was thinking maybe a PW, but no Pink

Having been "around" for a decade would seemingly narrow it down, so to speak. Yet a definitive ID might be next to impossible.
