Looks like leaf rollers. You can try Neem oil or some BT.

Sprayed with BT anyway. have never seen anything on the plants as far as caterpillars or slugs and i usually inspect at least once a day early mornings or evenings. So it might possibly be grasshoppers? What do you typically use for those?

I use neem oil to try to deter all those little critters, but it seems like a vicious cycle that never ends!

If you are
dealing with grasshoppers, your specific location will have a bearing on the
effectiveness of a control measure. Metro residential areas tend to have a more
local limited population of pest vs rural areas where breeding grounds tend to
be unrestricted which makes control more difficult.

As I stated
earlier, a systemic insecticide will be the most beneficial solution to both
reduce the numbers and limit damage over time. BT is a total waste of time and
money with regard to grasshopper control. BT is effective on “exposed”
larva/caterpillars. Repellents such as neem oil/garlic spray have very short
term limited value at best. One can choose to eradicate (reduce) the pest
numbers or move the pest to untreated area. That is the main reason I do not typically
chose repellents. Check the link below:

I live in the Chicago area and get the same thing but only on Pink Sunburst. Slugs or grasshoppers is my guess. I spray with the systemic insecticide, Cygon 2E because that's what I have and it seems to work.

My cannas are pretty much destroyed by what ever is eating the leaves. i am going to go out this weekend and cut away all the dead and ate up leaves hoping to save what is still there. i have cannas in 4 beds around my house. i keep hearing systemic insecticide in this post and many others. what exactly is that and how is it applied. a brand name or something specific i can pick up from my local home depot. i have used BT and neem oil. Bt was mixed in a sprayer and the neem oil was im a 24 oz spray bottle. garden safe brand fungicide 3 which contained neem oil but only treated once with that sized bottle

Then again it might be too late in the year to even do anything. typically i leave them year round i just cut them down to nothing one cold weather gets them
