Macrophylla Snow Queen ?????

last modified: 9 years ago

I'm kinda freaking out that my favorite Hoya has lost some leaves. They yellow and fall off. This is the second one and you can see the beginnings of another leaf starting to yellow. It is getting some new growth so I don't believe it has anything to do with the roots.

One thing I noticed is that since Hermine came thru it has cooled down especially at night. I actually needed a sweater last night sitting on the porch (where she hangs by a window)

Are Macrophylla sensitive to sudden temperature drops or cool air blowing on them? I also have fans going non stop for all the plants out there.

Thanks.

How long ago did you receive it?

I have noticed that within the first two weeks after obtaining a plant (shipped), sometimes a few leaves yellow and die. I just attribute it to shipping stress. A leaf gets positioned oddly in the box and experiences a crushing injury to the petiole (which you may not even notice...like tiny stress fractures), the climate is different, lots of things can attribute to yellowing leaves.

Be aware that macrophylla, polystachya, clandestina, and tjadsmalangensis prefer to dry out between waterings. I water mine every 2 weeks.

That's pretty, Monica! Where did you get it? I haven't heard of that clone before!

Aurorawa- I received the plant at the end of June. The only other thing I can think of is that I moved the plant onto the screened porch about 2 weeks ago. Then of course the recent drop in temperature. It's in a fast draining mix and there are signs of new growth. I'm paranoid of over watering so I definitely let it go dry before waterings.

Denise & Brad - This is my favorite Hoya to date. I got it from Amy. I love the name too.

Brad do you make your own costumes?

I do. But this year is where some actual sewing is involved. Here's my past three costumes.

    Cruella De Vil (2013)

Cyndi Lauper (2014-my first theatre Halloween party! We didn't have one last year, but we are planning on one this year :) ).

The Wicked Witch Of The East (last year). Sadly, this one was only used for photos and wasn't part of any celebrations, but it was fun to put together. The tulle skirt is just strips that I cut to the right length and knotted around some elastic. I did hand sew a strip of purple fabric to the back of the hat.

Fun fact: All three costumes shown here used the same pair of shoes. I just glittered them up for last year so I could have my own pair of Ruby Slippers :).

Thank you, Monica! Which one was your favorite?

Hope your Snow Queen recovers! Get well wishes from Her Majesty ;). I did not draw this, it was an Internet capture. Using it for my future costume idea. Wonder if the flowers on it will be white?

It's hard to pick a favorite. I love your creativity with Cyndi Lauper. (I'm an 80's girl - most listened to station on my sat radio) :-)

That's a pretty plant, Monica. I have two Macrophyllas (variegata and Pot of Gold) but I think I have to get Snow Queen now that I've seen it. I hope yours is done pouting now. :D

Brad, I have to second Monica and pick Cyndi Lauper. You really nailed her look!

Thank you both, Monica and Gloria! Cyndi's an idol of mine. I was born in '90, so I got to grow up watching re-runs and VHS tapes of some 80's cartoons and sitcoms as well. Sadly, Jem was one I didn't get to experience until a few years ago when they started showing re-runs of it on a now defunct network called The Hub. Thinking of going as Jem or Pizzazz for a future Halloween as well (but not this year).

Cyndi was pretty fun and easy to do :). I forgot to wear my earrings (clip-ons) for it, but it was still a hit with everyone. The longest part was putting on all of the accessories!
