Some random September pics

A few hostas are fast approaching dormancy, a few have some melt out on some leaf centres b u t there are many that still look quite good.

As you can guess, since these have been posted few times before that they belong in the favourite category. ;-)

Have a look ... and add to these with your own pics if you like! I'm sure you have lots of hostas that are looking mighty fine still.

Jewel of the Nile - aaahhhhh...stops me in my tracks!

Queen Josephine - what can I say, lol

Rainforest Sunrise - guaranteed to please

Cold Heart - aging like a fine wine

Happy Dayz - young kin to Orange Marmalade

Dark Star - amazing performer, nothing bothers it

June Spirit - more beautiful with each passing year...saving pods, hoping for babies

Liberty - unbelievable hosta!

Queen of the Seas - shade and sun colours

I will have to add Dark Star to my list. I like the sound of "nothing bothers it".

    Page two...cont'd.

    Flemish Sky

    Dream Queen

So Sweet - yes, it is!

Guardian Angel - a pleaser with good, soft colour. Amazing for September.

Sagae - tall and proud, with companion Chelone (white blooms are later than Hot Lips ones)

Brother Stefan - good colour in this location

The Minnesota Mafia - a dazzler with many interesting colour changes

QOTS / CH / - love the look of these two close together. Both have a sheen to them. I think Fall brings out some fascinating changes!

Dark Shadows - moved in spring, didn't miss a beat

June sport - can't figure how it retains its blue.... because it is planted in dry area, full sun from about 11 am onwards with only a bit of dappled shade from the small tree behind it. Folks, keep your blue June sports - they can take any exposure and look good!

Popmama, your list could potentially get longer....all of these hostas aren't bothered by anything! Lol.

they look so fresh!!..some of my white margins are no longer white..they're yellow..and orange..and brown : (

Your margin colours are right in style, Nicholsworth! :-) It is my menagerie that is out of touch with the season, LOL!

Thank you, though - if hostas can look this fresh in September without any extra care, then they are definitely worthy of any garden and worthy of mention. I, of course, am tickled to show them to you all.

There are quite a few more but that is what winter is for.....to look at pictures of endless beautiful hostas to while away the snowy hours.

This just not fair to have hostas that look this beautiful this late in the season. Wow!!

    Nice stuff, as usual, Jo.

No recent pix, but one of my longest lasting hosta is Deep Blue Sea.

This pic was a month ago and it looks the same today...well, minus the flowers.

Amazing hosta Jo! You've got a lot of hosta that are doing so well for this time of year. You definitely are doing something right! I'll see if I have anything I can add to this thread.

Thank you, Bill! I keep looking for rain.....

Thank you, TJ! Love your DBS and the pale mauve flowers. I will never forget seeing it in person at Giboshihill Hostas. It really was the deepest blue I've seen and it was a massive hosta to boot. You still have lychnis blooming? Mine was done ages ago.

Thanks, NHL! considering what an exceptionally hot summer it has been, most of the hostas have weathered the heat and drought well. Bring on your photos as they are always a treat!

A lot of my hosta still look fine, but now the cold, stary nights come and that will bring an end to all this beauty. I love all your hosta, Jo, you must do everything right!

    Fire Island still looks great...

    Minuteman...

    and this unknown, maybe Avocado...

But some already show signs of retreating :-(

So lovely, Jo! That Jewel of the Nile pic looks like it was taken in the spring, it's so fresh!

Karin, it went down to 9 the other night - it is downhill after that :(

Your unknown hosta sure is a beauty! It looks like it just started the season...not nearing the end of it. If it is Avocado, I haven't seen a nicer one. :)

Kathy, it was one of the rare times I hosed down the hostas under the deck days ago as I rarely water overhead. I was climbing the steps to go in when that leaf caught my eye so down I went again. Can't tell the difference between spring and fall photos except for the state of other background plants and date of picture, lol.

I DO have some over-exposed to sun, under-watered uglies at the far side of the house but they don't want their picture taken....my Rhino Hide's dignity is no more...especially when Cherry Berry is still looking pristine and amazing in the same area! Go figure! SILVER STAR is so chewed at the edges you would think a designer has been at work! cringe-worthy.

I am enjoying my hostas more now though since it is a bit cooler on the odd day here and there. Badly wrenched my ankle in July that set me back weeks with barely any care for the garden. It's a miracle, flat out, that I have any that still look good. No fool like a stubborn old fool - descending the stairs on one's bum just to get to the hose - all for the love of the garden ...er...hosta! :D

I love this 'Avocado'. Took some very nices pictures last week, lighted with sun from below. That's one of the reasons why I love hosta so much. They always look good and are never boring :-) I bought three from your above shown hosta, because I liked them so much in your pictures. I hope mine will get so beautiful one day: Liberty, Dark Star and Flemish Sky. And my June and June Fever have pods, so I surely will try my luck with them!

I've got some that still look great. The first is Little Treasure. I added it this spring, it has at least doubled in size and looks really good now, this may be on my bullet proof list.

also still looking great today are first, Sunpower
next is Elegans and Pauls Glory
Sea Dream still looks good today
Queen of the Seas is holding too

Sherry, I also got Little Treasure new this year and I love it! Combined with blue it makes a great picture :-) And the colouring of the leaves is very nice. I think I will get some more next year.

Sherry, fall seems very far away in your garden too judging by the still-fresh looking hostas. I especially love Little Treasure. It's colours remind me of High Society in a way, so clean and crisp.

Some of my hosta are looking sad now, Dream Queen is extra sad this fall. The older varieties of hosta I have are all yellowing. I have several " mouse ear" varieties and those all look good! My Golden Tiara are usually the first to give up, they are all fairing well so far.

Really looking good there Jo. :) Some of mine are still good but fall colors and "carp" are sneaking in. Golden Tiara is also my first to go, especially when in more sun.

Jo, your pictures always inspire me, your hostas are beautiful! GA, DQ, and FI arrived in the mail yesterday along with Blue Angel and Designer Genes from LOTG - beautiful, healthy plants! Will have to get DBS for my hubby who loves blue hostas and I have a spot waiting for Queen Josephine.

Thank you, Jerry! My GTiaras are still doing well but the one I planted in the front last year is half crispy already - the others amazingly showing no signs of decline yet but as you guessed, they are in mostly shade.

Deb, nice of to say, thank you! Hoping to see photos of your new arrivals? Good performers, all!! You will love the super shine on QJ and looks extra pretty when in bloom. Deep Blue Sea is such a perfect gift for your DH - it seems to be the epitome of a "man's hosta"... rugged, sturdy looking and above all, handsome! Will it be a surprise gift? ;-)

Got a few pictures even though I am having camera problems. Here it goes:

Undulata Albomarginata and Clear Fork River Valley:

I am really enjoying that little Clear Fork River Valley. I love the size of the leaves and all the corrugation it has for a young plant. Here's a close up:

Francee. I just got her this year and I am impressed:

Cerveza. The coloring is really nice and different:

A young Lancifolia in a pot:

Golden Sculpture on the right. (Damage on leaves from falling debris.) It has huge leaves. On the left is Touch of Class with a NOID behind it. These are planted in spin out bags.

Plantaginea. It didn't flower. I think it didn't get enough light, and there is also root competition there. I plant to plant it in a spin out bag soon (I hope).

I have a few more and will try to post them later. But as you can see from my pictures, I have a lot of fallen leaves and whirlybirds. A sure sign fall and winter are coming. That's so sad!

    Continued---

Sagae. Slow but I am liking what I see.

Rhino Hide. With its thick leaves, not much will bother this one:

    First Frost. Always a winner:

And Paul's Glory. I love this one. This one is my most mature one (5 or 6 years old):

and a younger Paul's Glory in a container mix:

and one more Paul's Glory in a pot:

and Olive Bailey Langdon. This hosta has impressed me. It doesn't burn that easily and just looks great. (Any burn marks seen just appeared in the last week.)

Wow! Your hostas are really looking wonderful! Thank you for posting such great pics. The PGs are superb - the third photo (potted) is my favourite with such soft colour. Must be nice to have all that shade. Trade you for some sun? Lol

All the posted hostas are looking great! My guacamole is the best of the bunch but I don't have a picture of this week.

Sun Power not only looks like carp but fried carp at that ! lol

Yes, they do all look wonderful! NHL - that PG in a pot with Hakone grass is a Wow! Most of mine look too pitiful at this point to share images. Heat/sun, bugs/rabbits... a few more weeds than I like to see... and the fact that I mulched last fall instead of in the spring - so the beds just don't look that great right now. But everything that I planted this year is not only surviving, but growing and multiplying - so I'm happy with the garden overall. Late this summer I decided to add a Halcyon and two Honey Pie(s). They have definitely dug right in and made themselves at home! Surveying it all from the deck this morning, coffee in hand, I decided that it's pretty much on the right track... but I also decided where I'm going to make changes... in the shape of the beds, location of some plants, etc.... The bed changes will start to come this fall, as soon as we get some cool weather! Preparing and dreaming of spring already!!!

It is gratifying to see new hostas settle in so quickly, isn't it, Wendy? Sounds like you are raring to go as soon as weather cools....exactly what I am waiting for as well, lol. Humidity has been up to 97%! As far as the mulch goes, one trick I use for a quick refresher with old mulch is to take a mini hand-rake that resembles the regular leaf rake and turn the mulch over. It is quick and easy and not a fussy job that is too tedious but does the trick. Of course I don't have large expanses of mulch so it is much easier for me. I use the large rake for under the tree. That is where my potted hostas grow and they sit on a mulch floor. Looks like I have to replenish in the spring.

Thanks for the compliment windymess. I know it's sad to see our hostas deteriorate at the end of the season. You said that everything you planted this year is doing well, so that sounds promising. It's great that you took a moment to think about your plans for fall and next year. I think planning and dreaming are a necessary part of gardening. We try to make improvements and envision the outcome. It's part of the fun!

Karin, the hosta on the upper right of OBL is one of my Great Expectations. I like to have a few of them because I love them!

Kay---come on over! We've got lots of room here!

Wow, your hostas look fantastic Karin!!! I can see why you had your best summer in the garden!

Our summer had an extended period of heat, and there was practically no rain. Each time rain was forecast, it missed us. So it felt like all I was doing was watering and sweating! I have a lot of work to do in my garden and I keep trying to figure out where to put more hostas too!

Karin, I enjoyed looking at your photos - the very last set, middle row, first hosta....so elegant. What is its name please?

You have a beautiful collection of hostas and the care in growing them is evident. They show beautifully in each photo. Thank you for the additional treats.

Hi Jo, do you mean this one? Unfortunately it is one from my hosta friend's garden and I don't have an official ID. It might be Grünspecht. It is very nice, the dark green leaves do not show so well on the pictures, it is in a very shady bed and pictures often blurr.

I found also this picture, it shows the real colour a little better...
