How to use check valves to prevent low head drainage?

From what I understand here is how check valves work:

When water flows downstream through the check valve at a cracking pressure, the check valve opens and prevents water from flowing upstream. when downstream pressure drops below the cracking pressure, the check valve no longer prevents upstream flow and water can flow both directions.

So how can I prevent low head drainage due to elevation? You would need a valve that would prevent downstream flow when the pressure falls below the cracking pressure, right? A check valve prevents upstream flow when pressure goes above the cracking pressure, correct? If so, check valves does the opposite of what is needed.
