Contractor from Hell

All,

I really need some sound advice right now. My husband and I recently hired a lawyer to handle dealings with our contractor after a MAJOR mistake was done ro our new construction home. One of his workers confused our house with another site and put cement on 3/4 of the front of our house (he thought that he was there to do a stucco job). This was just one of so many mishaps that have happened throughout this building process; however, it was, by far, the worst incident and the final straw for us. We informed him that from that point onward, we wanted to find our own contractors to do the work in/on our house. His crew had shown themselves to be incompetent one too many times. After being told this, things changed. It became harder and harder to get in touch with him; calls were not returned and texts were completely ignored. Finally, we had no choice but to get a lawyer. A meeting was held at our house (we were present) during which certain "demands" were given on our behalf to our contractor from our lawyer. Today was his deadline to respond to our lawyer and....nothing. The guy who we found to do the exterior said that our contractor has been unreachable. I'm trying to keep this short but to give you all an idea of what he has started and not finished keep reading. A water line was never run to our house (he said that he doesn't know how "they" forgot to do that and he's the contractor!!), our dormers were terribly done and have to be redone, our cabinets have been started but aren't finished, electricity hasn't been activated, plumbing is pending, our doors haven't been adjusted to close correctly, one of the windows on our dormers qas cracked by one of his works, he lost 2 of our faucets and a shower system, his crew broke our fireplace, and the list goes on and on.

We are now concerned that he is not going to finish any of the work that he started because he is disgruntled about us getting a lawyer. Everyone, we had absolutely no choice. He would not get back to us.

My question is: What would you all do if you were in my shoes? We are paying so much money in interests on our construction loan every month. I just don't understand how people can do this to other people and sleep at night. Thanks in advance for any advice.
