No, I mostly use Miracle-Gro and Miracid, but lately found another local product that I use from spring-mid summer on many of my bonsai. It's: http://hendrikusorganics.com/organic-fertilizers/organobloom-5-2-4/

I use it almost exclusively. It's a great choice for bonsai for a number of reasons. It supplies all nutrients essential to normal growth in the ratio at which the average plant actually takes up those nutrients in a soluble form that's immediately available for uptake. It also gets its N from sources other than urea, which tends to promote coarse growth with long internodes and large leaves.

The product Hemlock suggests is actually more accurately labeled a soil amendment than a fertilizer. Unfortunately, using that product, which is comprised of various types of meal (feather meal, fish bone meal, alfalfa meal) leaves the plant at the mercy of soil life activity. In order for the nutrients locked in hydrocarbon chains to become available for uptake by plants, the products the nutrients are locked in must be broken down by soil biota, whose populations in containers are notorious for their boom/bust cycles. IOW, you never know what will be available or when it will be available. Additionally, the fine particles of material filter into what would otherwise be air pores and and cause water retention issues, especially in the shallow pots we use for bonsai.

FP 9-3-6 gives the grower near total control over what the plant gets insofar as nutrition goes, the Organobloom product, once applied, offers the grower virtually no control over what happens. Also, if temperatures happen to dip after the Organobloom is applied, or it's applied when temps are 55* or cooler, ammonium toxicity can result ...... and it's very unlikely the average hobby grower would know enough about fertilizers to accurately diagnose the issue, which is very common but almost never diagnosed correctly by the hobbyist.

The Miracle-Gro products are ok, but you'll find they get their N from urea and they lack many of the nutrients essential to normal growth. The FP product is much more expensive than MG, but since the average dose costs only a fraction of a penny, you can fertilize an entire houseful of plants for less than a nickel - not much of a hit to the pocket book when you consider how far an ounce of the product goes.

Thanks Al. I switched from MG to Dyna Gro FP, namely for the calcium (I wasn't aware of the affect of urea-based nitrogen). In the OP, I was asking about the Pro-Tekt additive. I bought some and just started using it since I read about so many people using it.

I use FP and recently added the Pro-Tekt bc I read it can help with heat stress and it has been very hot around here...oh, but I meant I've been giving it to my citrus and this is bonsai...either way I wanted to chime in. I've not been using it long enough to tell you if it is helping.

Perhaps Al will chime in again!! Fingers crossed he sees this.
