I have a 9 x 5 bath with a 9' ceiling that I plan to gut and install a shower with glass door. All four walls have 4" cove molding, even over the tub. The tile (which I plan to replace) now extends to about 8' in the tub enclosure and ends about 12 inches below the cove molding. I want to have the shower tiled all the way to the ceiling and I cannot decide what to do with the cove molding. I could install the tile to the bottom of the existing cove molding but if I do I think it will look odd because the thickness of the backer board with the tile will extend further out from the wall than the bottom edge of the cove molding. I can only envision a few alternatives: 1) just remove all of the cove molding in the bathroom, 2) remove the cove molding just in the shower enclosure and stub it out where it meets the backer board and tile, or 3) fur the shower down about 8-9 inches and tile the shower ceiling and have the cove molding extend around the outside of the fur down. Any suggestions?
