Can I still save this failed air layer?

Back on May 18 I tried to air layer a branch off a Sugar Maple that is growing in my Grandma's yard. I took a branch about a foot long and I did the ring bark around it with the two rings a inche apart and pealed off the bark and cambium. I wrapped it in spagnum moss and a sandwhich bag with twist ties and aluminum foil.

Well today I cut it off thinking it was ready and unwrapped it. Well its got some callus forming around the top gurdle and it has little white bumps on the callus tissue. Well it looked like the tree tried to bridge the gab in the wound. The buds on the branch look like they're trying two swell like they're trying to push new growth so I just took off the leaves to presurve energy and moisture and planted it in a small pot with regular potting soil. So can I still save this branch or is it pretty much done for since I already cut it off the tree? If so how do it? Thanks.
