New stalk on azalea looks like different plant

This summer our azalea plant sprouted out three stalks, from the side of old growth, that are growing straight up through the plant and have completely different looking leaves and growth pattern from the rest of the plant. What's going on here?

Photo? I find sometimes deciduous azaleas do this, but it's mostly the contrast between old and new growth I'm seeing.

A few of mine have done this during this past fall too. I think they're all Encore Azaleas, but would need to double check that. I figured I would wait until spring to see what happens... but I'm curious if anyone has an answer. I will post photos once our rains subside in a week or two.

This has happened with some of my Plumtastic Azaleas. One section is all purple leaf and the other side is all green. It seems to be trying to revert to the parent stock. At least they are healthy plants so I'm not too worried but it is curious.
