In order to attach the item to the stairs, I'd recommend consulting your local home-improvement store to see if they have tips on how you should go about it. I'd also like to give you a heads-up, and let you know that this item does come in "Individual" or a "Set". If you are going to use it for the stairs, make sure you purchase the "Set" rather than just one, as that means it will be one single item.
