MTD Gas Hog Mower:

Back To My MTD
Gas Hog Mower: I hope this is not too
confusing and I promise not to intentionally mix matter again. If My Brain Will Participate. LOL!

In the mild
70s North TX weather I found time to do some cleaning by working some fireplace
starter wood. Plus, ck my Brigg’s mower’s
excess fuel use issue. I was shocked to not
see any Carb adjustment screws and quickly focused on the next possibly causes. I was seeing one of the dirtiest air filters
I have seen. Next to it, I was seeing a
recent fuel leak at the tank’s top seam.
It will take the next use or two but I feel this is a connection on the recent
poor fuel matter. I feel the filter
could be affected by fuel vapor causing the restriction and fuel use.

In my
opinion, that’s a contaminated dirty filter and more restricted than just a
grass dirty filter. I’ll hope to see an
improvement this week as a 2 wk cut is due on the front and a 3 wk on the back. Then I’ll hope there is a repair for the plastic
tank vs not filling over 2/3rd tank or ½ tank that has cut the small yard.

***Info
prior to this on My MTD Gas Hog, was included with Gate Hinges and Hedge Trimmer
below from the past:

Mower’s Gas: Back to my MTD being a
Gas Hog! My 2 gallons a season with Stabil treaded fuel l is down to .5 Gal
left today (since the MTD is in the mix of use vs for leaves only). I have cut
our small 70’ X 120’ lot with 2,000 SQ /Ft home (side to rear drive with 2 Car
rear Car-Ports on a tank). That is a challenge due to not having a good
Pattern/Plan. I changed the “Black colored Plug (with no build-up) and filter
and saw no increase.

What is the approx sq footage
expected on the Self Propelled MTD per tank. My Non Self Propelled Murray has
no problem on this yard on one tank of gas. I will measure both tanks’
capacities’. Both starts 1st lull and runs good except for the fuel usage.

It’s a Pain not to finish a 30
minute job on a tank of fuel. My tanks on both are filled to the top seam of
the plastic tank vs neck.

Loger the Black Plug is evidence
that your burning more fuel than normal . My 5.5 HP Quantum gave me 2 hrs of
run time before refilling . However my mower was not self propelled , therefore
I suppose you could expect some horse power drain and additional fuel
consumption. Having said that , 30 minutes per tank is EXTREMELY HEAVEY fuel
consumption !

3 yrs is the longest I have ever ran
a spark plug within a mower , since I mow approx. 3 hrs weekly for approx. 50 +
hrs annually (150 hr Max Plug Life). 5 Yrs for the Paper Air Filters with
regular cleaning , I clean both Air Filters and Plugs Annually . Fuel filters
usually get changed when warranted 2-3 yrs normally . I would suggest you
recheck your carb , since you altered it possibly ?

Well Loger fix the fuel tank leak , put in a new plug and air filter with some concentrated fuel cleaner and run it like you stole it Bro !

Pics that w/n attach yesterday. Are their limits that I am unaware of? That caused me not to be able to attach the
two attachments (sized attachments, less than 120 KB ea). My adding attachments has been a hit and miss since moving from XP
to Win7. I like to show what I’m seeing
to possibly show more than I’m telling.

I,am at a total loss on that Bro !

    From a conversation, I remembered I have a 6.5 HP Briggs
Quantum Edge gas tank + parts. That
should fit from a neighbor’s salvaged Block”. I saw it during my walk on the curb and
alerted him, thinking he forgot it but it was to go (this time) ....LOL! It was basically the same as my 5.5HP. All of the excess metal goes to a friend that
salvage metal vs back on the curb.

I was called out (about 6 blocks) to get some ‘Healthy Size
Red Oak Limbs today vs Trunk cut up for me.
I asked why not those nice trunk sections 12”+ diameter and approx
16“long. He said they are diseased and I
do not recall the disease. He went to
that pile and found some “Black looking bark that was on the trunk that
represented the disease. Can a trunk be
diseased w/o the limbs being infected? I
usually quarantine any unhealthy looking wood from home or prime stock at least
    a year.

Maybe I have exceeded limits related to Pics w/o knowing
and need to contact G/W vs the frustration. What are the limits?

Which Limits , Burning of Diseased Wood or Pic ,s ? lmao !

P.S. Go with the 6.5 Quantum the 5.5 may have iffy Compression also !

The 5..5 has good life left in it. The 6.5 had a scored cylinder and bent crank. I’ll only switch the gas tank now but used a
large rear wheel last year (from the parts I saved). I have the
coil and other wheels in the pit. If
needed, I’ll finish the race with the Murray or Briggs (All Donated As Parts). These are my 3rd and 4th
mowers in my Pit since 1973. 1 & 2 took
me the 1st 20 years and never stopped vs looking like Hell with all
the mixed parts. #2 was a dream Tech. running off the governor. No 1 started on the 1st pull after
storing 10 years and had been converted to electronic ignition. Points were the "PITS" on my 1968 VW and ALL !!!

Loger , I,ll put my Money on the VW with a 60 inch deck winning the mower race points or no points lol .

Bingo! I Cut Our “Complete Yard In 30 Minutes On A Half
Tank Of Fuel”! After replacing the Leaking
Fuel Tank and Air Filter that made a difference. The leak was not as critical, since it almost
had to be overfilled for the Stress Crack at the Seam to Leak. IMO, the Contaminated Filter from fuel vapor
    was more restricted.

    Looking at
the small stress crack I feel it can be repaired if that plastic bonds life
some I have seen . Next, with the tank
being as generic as it is, I feel plenty used ones are around. I’ll use a good used part as fast as a new
one and it might last longer. LOL!

If Carboncrank was still active we could send him a Cudo's for his recommended Snake Bite Cure all "New Air Filter" advice . I'am glad you have your freebee cutting well and at a normal fuel consumption rate Loger . I had almost 10 yrs on my 5-5 Quantum before I gave it to my Son , Engine was still sound but the deck had seen better times . lol.

My goal is to show what I saw and moved past as I try to
catch up or recycle projects I have saved too long. Technology has left me over stocked related
to Automotive, Metal, Computers, General Mechanics and General Home Maintenance. I have cleared 75 % but another 10 – 15% w/n
hurt. If it means nothing to me now just
think it will be trash for my kids to move.

I’ll get back to the Recycling as I burn time moving from XP
to Win7. I will continue to run XP on a
2nd machine to share and work “Old 2000 Auto Cad and Photoshop Files”.

Bingo! I am finally able to show what I saw to cure my MPG.

Loger , You should be whipped ! Tomplum will give you a dozen lashs !!!

    If a good
whipping will help, I’ll take it just too almost be myself again!!!!
