I hear you on that point. Have done just that with my studies in the Tetragonostachys subgenus of the genus Selaginella. But then my work is not connected to any institution of higher learning. The reason why the taxonomic treatments are done the way they are done is due to established protocols within the scientific botanical community. But there are several approaches that a layperson can take that supersede the niceties of botanical terminology. However, as in my case, you really would need to have a background in botanical taxonomy so that you can deal with the established criteria while in the process of creating a new perspective by a reworking of the way the different plants are looked at. Species delineation can be a very difficult highway to navigate and often depends on characteristics that are not readily observable. Plus with the current emphasis on DNA graphing the derivation of species and their relationships or probable origins only compounds the complexity already in place over what exactly is a species.

Your best bet is education. Once you know what it all means then you can make whatever changes you want in what work you do to make it easier for others who are not so versed in the jargon of the taxonomy.
