Full overlay cabinets

I've been looking at kitchen images of full overlay doors/drawers but I've noticed some have some areas where the face frame shows. Is this for clearance for such things like folding doors for corner cabinets and fridge doors? Or are they mismeasures?

It's style. You have different choices of full overlay and partial overlay. For example, IKEA has 1/8" showing on each side. There's 3 different kinds of full overlay which includes 1 1/4" and 1 3-8". A lot of companies go with 1 1/4".

Pics #1 is because they had the beauty panel covering exact cabinet but not the drawer front sides and vice versa, the drawer fronts could have been spec wider to cover the side of the panel.

On mine, anytime two separate boxes meet, there is a bit of the frame that shows, maybe a quarter to a half inch. Where the doors meet on the same box (without a stile), there is no noticeable gap. There is a large gap on each side of the corner cabinet because of the filler required there so the door will open.

has to do with the size of the reveal, the space between the doors, specified for the brand and type of construction.

Frameless most often have reveals of 1/16 to 1/8"

Framed "full overlay" will have reveals between 3/16 and as much as 3/8. 1/4 is perhaps the most common. It depends on the specific hinge used and the doorstyle edge. A narrower reveal is possible with an edge that has a profile though that is rare nowadays.

I know of one brand that has framed full overlay with the same reveal as frameless. They do this by using hinges for frameless and notching the stiles where the hinges go.

Thx for the info everyone. We are having a local cabinetmaker custom make so now I know what to ask as we finalize style. Thanks.

No reveal. Would love to see more pics!

Thanks! No reveal because I'm still not done. :-/ No backsplash. Still. I haven't been on GW much since Houzz barged in. I'll see if I can find the almost-done reveal post from years ago.

I found my old thread with more photos. I think it links to a 2nd thread. (There used to be a 150 entry limit on a thread.)

Breezygirl it's gorgeous! Love the walnut too. I was considering it but worried about maintenance. I wouldn't cut on it but I have young kids so expect spills.

Smm--Thank you! When we finally moved back into our house after our year long whole house reno, my kids were 6 and 2. That counter has seen many spills, dents, etc. I think it still looks great! I get compliments on it often. I occasionally (1-2 year year) put another coat of Osmo on it, which takes all of about 15 minutes.

Breezygirl! Nice to see you back! Now I don't feel like the oldest member of the ABB club. Although, after three years, I should probably get pulls on the upper cabinets, my nails are ruined.

*Sigh* Gigi, you are NOT the oldest member of the ABB club (nor is BreezyGirl) - that's probably me! It's been over 8 years (since spring of 2008). I'm about ready to throw in the towel and forget about a backsplash! Every time I finally get enough saved, something else comes up that's more important - and now I have two kids in college.

(We're doing cash only for the backsplash - just as we did for the Kitchen - and I want a rather expensive backsplash - Jeffrey Court Fire & Ice.)

Oh, and while I have glass shelves for the "glass" cabinets, I still don't have the glass to go in the doors - just open space! (And boy do the shelves and items in those cabinets get dusty quickly!!!)

We do have all our cabinet hardware, though!

Regarding full overlay - as others have said, it depends on your cabinetmaker. My spacing is:

    • Approx 1/4" on the sides (b/w the edge of the cabinet and the drawer front/door)
    • A bit less than 1/8" b/w the drawers
    • A bit less than 1/16" b/w the two doors on my 36" wide sink base - no center stile and you cannot see into the cabinet at all.

The extra width on the left end is the decorative door panel on the end of my peninsula - not the drawer base cabinet itself.
