I like the big mudroom and pantry - but I live in North Dakota, where we need a lot of space for coats and boots. I would need a closet of some kind in the foyer. You don't have a huge amount of cabinet space, so you'll need the panty space for large pots and pans, small appliances, etc. Depending on the width, I would either put hanging rods on both sides of the mud room closet, or a rod on one side and shelves on the other. Corners in closets are not at all efficient.

Can you add dimensions to your drawing? Which way is north?

How far away are the bedrooms? I can see the value of access to the laundry from outside if you are on a farm or spend a lot of time playing in the dirt (some call it gardening), but most laundry is generated in the bedrooms. I wouldn't like lugging clothes baskets all over the house if I could avoid it.

I like the overall layout - nice compact work area out of the traffic lanes. You are going to have to carefully consider where you will store things, however: you have very little storage for dishes near the DW, for example. Make sure you plan out storage near point of use, such as potholders, cooking utensils and spices near the stove, and cutting boards near the prep sink.

I fear your kitchen will be dark, even with all the windows (depends on the direction they face). Consider solatubes. I might also be tempted to move the fridge over, so I could add a small window looking out to the porch - it would be nice to see who's coming to the door form the kitchen.

Is it new construction?

Is it beach northern California, Sierras northern California, valley, bay area? They're all so different, but only one requires a spot for boots. :P

I would not want my main sink in a major entrance walkway but have never worked in a prep sink kitchen.

The layout looks good. I don't like the laundry room door behind the garage entry, but I think the W/D are better on the outside wall.

If you think the MR and pantry are too big, you could move the kitchen 12" toward the garage, making the dining room larger, and taking the 12" from the mudroom and pantry. The range aisle could be made wider then, if it is less than 42". The only other part of the kitchen that it would affect is the clean-up sink and DW wall, which would be shorter. The window would need to be adjusted, but another panel could be added to the DR window.

Ann mentioned it being dark--if you flip the fridge and the counter/cabinets beside it, you could put in a window that looks out to the porch. Can't recall if that was discussed previously.
