Another rose rosette possible situation

Hi I have RRD suspected on two rose bushes I just planted this year

Zephy climber and new dawn

Zephy

Zephy

New Dawn

I took the Zephy branch down to ground and bagged it. Nothing else like that so far.

New dawn is next to it about 5 ft away. Sprouting two long canes with lots of red. On this cane the thorns are rubbery.

Oh boy my plans for a rose covered fence are not looking good.

Thank you, I've lurked here for months as a novice rose gardener. Just planted my first 30 or so rose bushes this year. I'm obsessed! Learned so much here. I first heard of RRD browsing this forum so when I saw that growth I said "uh oh". Would have never had a clue without the info on here.

So far having a tough time with the garden between JBs, aphids, dear, black spot, and now RRD possibly. But I'm not giving up, love roses too much already.

The bottom photo looks like healthy new growth.

The other looks like rrd but what is attached to the cane.

Thanks guys. That Zephy has struggled since I got it. Bought it with powdery mildew (didn't know total newb) it's dropped all its leaves almost then this. Should probably go ahead and shovel it ☹️

If it were mine I would just cut that cane that it grew on. Down as far as you can then watch the rose very closely for any thing else odd.

Ashley do you know what that beige colored thing is on the cane appears to look like a nest.

Oh sorry I think it's just dead leaves

ZD is definitely RRD and you caught it very early.

New Dawn...I haven't seen reddish new growth on ND at this time of the year. You might want to start a thread and ask specifically for someone near you to look at their ND and tell you if theirs looks like yours.

I will post pics tonight of my new growth in ND. Where are you located? I'm 6a/b Cincinnati.

Thank you I am in Pittsburgh which I think is 6b

The promised pic of new New Dawn growth, 9/16/16:

Awesome thanks for the pics! I guess pretty similar will just have to keep an eye on it. Mine might be a bit more red.

    Thanks again!

I am so suspicious of any new growth on all my roses now, going to have to learn what is normal for them.

This is such a terrible disease seems like it can just come out of nowhere and there is not much you can do about it

there is not much you can do about it

See the e-book I made and then realize that if we work together, if we share and learn from each other, we ARE NOT totally helpless.

A lot in the e-book is from observations I made in east Tennessee, but there are other gardens we visited, and there are the discussions from here on GardenWeb going back to the days of Spike that multiplied the roses that we got to see.

Ashley, those are two different laterals. The growth that's the scariest are the huge new bendy canes that come from the ground. All of mine have currently hardened and green up. but they are in a period of active, almost explosive growth, so if I have any more of those, I'll post some additional pics.

I know. I'm freaked out by the new growth on my Dark Desire, but it matches that on another bush quite a distance away. Not to hijack your post, but if anyone has any good pics of DD's new growth (meaning mature canes), I'd love to see them. I think learning what is normal for each variety is key in ID. It seems many of the Kordes roses have super burgundy new growth.

This forum is amazing. Thank you Ann for th elink to your E-book. something to read when it's not possible to be out with the roses.

Thank you so much Ann and vaporvac!

what a great source of info you have put together Ann! Even though it's terrible it is interesting to read about. I want to know how to identify it and deal with it. The photos are pretty wild of what it does to roses. It's awful but kind of fascinating also.

I didnt know the canes started off bendy. Good to know so much to learn.

Sorry to butt in ... I've been reading the RRD threads after a scare I had recently. Turned out to be a false alarm, but I've learned so much here, and am grateful.

Ann, I was reading your e-book (great info, thank you), and thought of another for your section on public gardens: The Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. We were there a few months ago, and were stunned to see all of the historic rose gardens gone. Every bush. It was heartbreaking, just acres of dirt.

    .

(Sorry again, OP, for the O/T post.)

Miz_G, thanks for the update. I remember when a year or so ago, someone from the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens was interviewed on the news about how they were dealing with RRD, and it was infuriating and ignorant. I'm glad they took action.

Omg that is heartbreaking and terrifying! How can this be happening??
