Was hiring landscape designer worth it?

I am in the beginning stages of landscaping project for my front and back yard. Both are very small spaces. I know what I want to do with the front, but I am not sure what to do with the back, and how to tie the two together. Is it worth hiring a landscape designer, or should I simply go with a landscape contractor with compatible aesthetic? All advice is welcome!
