Laundry Room/Area

I just bought a 1,098 sq. foot 1950s bungalow in Southern California (raised foundation & attic space) with a space for a washer in the kitchen (it actually would drain into the kitchen sink - ick!) and no space for a dryer. I would like to have a proper space for the laundry area, but see the benefit of two different places. I would love opinions/feedback about one of these options: (1) detached two-car garage (approx. 16 feet from the back door of the house, no current electrical/gas/plumbing, on a slab) or (2) remove one of many hall closets and the neighboring 3'x3' shower (I would convert the separate tub to a tub/shower combo) and finish off for the machines and some rods for drip-drying. I think I would prefer it to be in the house because I drip dry a lot of my clothes, but I see the benefit of moving the laundry to the garage since the house is small already. What I am curious about is the following: (1) if you drip dry in a garage do your clothes pick up automotive odors, (2) do buyers hate laundry in the garage, even in a small house (I always want to keep resale in mind)? Thanks for the help!
