The island is a barrier. It should not interrupt the legs of the triangle between the sink, range, and fridge. I'm afraid that you have a great deal of unusable space in the new addition because the counters and organization are far less than optimal. Also, the clearance from the island to table does not appear to be sufficient. You need 60" for that.

I would have to ask if you are working with true professionals here. Is your architect a real architect? Or just a draftsman? Is your KD a real KD or just a cabinet salesperson at a dealer? Sadly, you are not being served well by either the basic architecture or the cabinet crammed dysfunctional kitchen.

I would reconfigure the short L side of the counter and put the sink there. You could switch the drawers and cabinets so the plumbing could work there.

live_wire_oak - I believe that both the architect and KD are using are professional, but it was the KD who referred us to the architect. We also brought up the interruption of the work triangle, and were told there were no options because we wanted windows. I can't think of a solution, but kind of hoped that is what the KD could do for us.

GigiLane - Thanks for the suggestion - that is one of the thoughts I had, to move the sink to the short part of the L. Still not the perfect work triangle, but better.

I would move the refrigerator to the left of the windows so everything you need to cook is in that corner and make your island a bit smaller

Could you make your kitchen U shape and make your island smaller?

Maybe you only need an island with 2 or 3 stools since your table is so close.also,could you put your microwave in your island? Sharp makes a drawer one, then the area next to the fridge could be a pantry.

Maybe you can flip the island so it is parallel with your dining room table? Then attach it to one wall, leaving one side as a pass through. My paneled fridge and range are on the same wall and my island is like that. Sink is on a wall that would be an L to the fridge and range.
