Wood and stone pillars

Are the wood posts sitting on top of the stone pillar bases or is the stone built around the wood pillars?

    The wood posts normally would be sitting on footers at depth for frost line, tube forms can be used around the posts for cementing them in, then the stone has a support to sit on around the posts. Also best to stain the posts prior to installation.
