Thanks Cindy, but as you can see on the left, there is only about 5" until the trim for the window, so a book case wouldn't work and the right side is the door, I fee like if you put a book case there, it would block your view of the fireplace when you walk in the room....so maybe a bench is a good idea on the right, but I can't cover the floor vent on the left....such a difficult space, maybe I'll find some art that I like

How about installing mirror on the side walls and then some floating shelves.

How about a set of trunks? Without knowing your decor, you have several styles to choose from but Wayfair has several that are very affordable. Plus you can stash stuff like games, toys or even use for blankets and pillows if you have overnight guests. Here is a vintage set link below which compliments your wall color....

Why not add some architectural detail trim on the walls and purchase large sconces. http://houzz.com/photos/239465

You need some weight and bit of fabric softness to balance the impact of the stone
Have you furnished the space yet? Perhaps two chairs medium size on either side would be a launch point
Then you can decide on some art and maybe larger sconces with more interest and impact

The fire place and flooring look lovely, how is your funriture placed ? One idea on the short side, would be to do a floor standing vase with branches. On the right, hanging art work-vertically a set of 2.
