Pruning vining vs non-vining plants

I was re-reading a bookmarked article about pruning. It mentioned that when one pinches a non-vining plant, new branches will emerge up and down the stem. However when doing the same for a vine, new branches will form from the leaf buds just below the cut. If I knew this, I'd forgotten it.

I've been trying to encourage a small bleeding heart vine to branch and had been pinching only the tips; new branches were emerging only near the pinched end. After reading the pruning article, I sacrificed some long branches and whacked the vine way back yesterday to encourage development of a more shapely plant.

I know I'd observed this branching characteristic on the coral honeysuckle but attributed it to that specific plant rather than because it was a vine.

Maybe this tidbit will be helpful to another member.
