Lots of grasses do well in containers but the smaller ones tend to look and perform best. Larger growing OG's like the Miscanthus (your zebra grass) need appropriately large containers to accommodate their root systems as well as to balance off their size/height.

What is it exactly that you are looking for? And are these mixed containers or just to hold the grass? Do you want evergreen/year round effect or do you care if the grasses go dormant in winter?

Two evergreen grasses that are very effective in containers are Stipa arundinacea and the brown/red/copper Carex grasses.. Carex buchananii, Carex flagelifera come especially to mind, the latter looks especially nice in a tall container where it's long stems can trail so gracefully downward.

The stipa has been reclassified - it is now Anemanthele lessoniana, aka New Zealand wind grass or pheasant tail grass.

You're right on the name change. I got acquainted with it when it was called Stipa so I'm used to that name, and it's been hard for me to change because it's so much easier to remember. As well, it's still going by Stipa in my local nurseries as I just bought one labeled that way a couple of weeks ago, so I think either name will work, at least for the time being.

The new zealand grass wouldnt work for me because I am in zone 7 :(

Actually one of my two zebra grasses I planted in pots died on me over the winter(It did have problems with ants too last summer bulding mounds in it), so that could have been the reason.This one has been doing good for me.Its going on 2 yrs since I planted it in this pot.heres some pictures

UPDATE: Even though the one pictured above is still living, During hot days it withers up bad making it look ugly/half dead. Throwing some water to it it would always come back and look strong but would still wilt bad off and on. So I deciced to transplant it to the yard. When I pulled it out of the planter there was hardly no soil. It was 75% roots, The roots where massive. Never seen anything like it. Keep in mind since its close to the garage door it always got extra water and extra humic acid , molasses, etc. I am gonna try another ornamental grass called Maiden grass in this pot, Ive had great succes dividing this grass. There is a few times where a small plant starts by the bigger plants. Thats whats I used in the planter, small baby plant. I quit dividing the zebras grass. Its to hard to get out of the ground. Now I see why its hard to remove lol
