Stolen Pumpkin

Does anyone have any tips or advice to prevent pumpkins and stuff from being stolen? I have a plant growing on the front yard in an urban area. The vines were hanging on the fence and there was this one good pumpkin that was growing just fine. Today I noticed it missing. I had even made the effort of putting a net over it and tying it to the fence as a precaution but now it's gone anyway!

To make matters worse, for all I know it might've happened while I was standing right there. I was busy trimming some diseased leaves today and a lot of people had passed by. For all I know, it might have been one of them, taken from right under my nose! Gah! The utter disgrace! I am more than mildly annoyed...

Anyway, there are still two pumpkins growing along the fence. I'm kinda paranoid now so is there any way I can make sure those don't get poached too?

Cameras don't stop anything, but they can point to a culprit if most of the street traffic is local. Anything short of a mean dog, or sitting on the front porch like in that movie Secondhand Lions with loaded shotguns (rock salt loads of course) - something I don't recommend BTW. My advice - since lawsuits and legal trouble over shooting someone, or the costs of keeping a mean dog around (not to mention the moral issues) are far more costly than the investment in 3 pumpkins - is to grow some out near the fence for the hungry neighbors, and some where the pickings aren't so tempting.

And please realize this is tongue in cheek. Please don't anyone shoot someone, or sic a mean dog on anyone, over a pumpkin lol.

It is crummy that folks do that...but they do. Chances are it was a teenager or just a jerk. Either way...do not take it personal. Putting candy under the nose of children (symbolic) is a temptation they can not handle. Move on...
