Thanks for your question. We space our boards with a few considerations in mind. We review the gap with an eye towards aesthetics - looking at the width of the foundation, the size of the board and the appropriate gap. We also review the gap area to confirm we have adequate ventilation.

There are building codes which regulate the minimum required amount of ventilation in crawlspaces. The code dictates required ventilation relative to floor area and the type of vapor barrier / retarder on the floor. It also sets requirements for the location of vents relative to corners of building. You should consult your local building officials.
