Roses that always have fragrance

My roses that always have fragrance even in cold, rainy weather are:

- Acapella

- Strawberry Hill

- Radox Bouquet

- The McCartney Rose

These are "valuable" roses to have since we have a lot of cool weather.

How about everyone else...and feel free to substitute hot weather for cool weather. :)

Of the roses above, my favorite fragrance is Strawberry Hill's fragrance. And to think I kept procrastinating ordering this rose because I wasn't sure I would like its smell!

My roses for the most reliable fragrance in cool or hot weather is Sunsprite, pink Don Juan, Quiteness and Mrs. B R Can't. In the warm spring time my Climbing pinkies waft and smell heavenly!

Most reliably fragrant ones in my hot dry climate are Memorial Day, Double Delight, Felicia, Firefighter, Fragrant Cloud, Sonia Rykiel and Marie Pavie. Out of these my favourite fragrance comes from FF, DD and Felicia. My other favourite fragrances are from Ebb Tide, Papa Meilland, Barbra Streisand and Blue Moon, but these may not be fragrant in high heat.

boncrow - really! I thought that Sunsprite and Quietness didn't have much fragrance. Shows what I know! :) LOL Climbing Pinkie sounds wonderful!! Do you have a picture?

Fragrancenutter - My Memorial Day smells in what little heat we get, but barely in cool weather. I didn't think Marie Pavie had fragrance - again, shows what I know!! :) It's nice to see your favorite fragrances.

I've found Sunsprite to always be fragrant. Others are:

    Beverly

    Double Delight

    Pink Peace

    Perfume Delight

    Tiffany

    Buxom Beauty

    Francis Meilland

    Firefighter

Liebeszsuber blooms can be very fragrant when the temperatures are cool, otherwise they're moderately fragrant.

My favorite fragrances are Tiffany, Beverly, Francis Meilland and Pink Peace

A majority of my roses are at least moderately fragrant.

My nose doesn't frequently recognize smells, good or bad, because of allergies. For instance, my husband recently detected a leaky toilet seal by the foul smell it was putting out, and even with my nose close to the offender I couldn't smell a problem. So you know if I smell a rose anything like consistently, it's a strongly fragrant one.

Given that, I can almost always smell Sharifa Asma, Francis Dubreuil, Jude the Obscure, William Shakespeare 2000, Maggie, and most of my Hybrid Perpetuals. Beyond that, it's a toss-up. Even my lilacs aren't always fragrant to me. FWIW, I find that in our relatively dry climate, it's during the cool and/or moist periods that I can smell the fragrance better than in normal summer conditions. I can't think of a hybrid tea that I can always smell except for Perfume Delight (and it's actually unpleasantly perfume-like to me), but I consider myself an 'oddball' in the fragrance department.

    Cynthia

P.S. I think I can usually smell other peoples' Double Delight, it's just that that rose has never survived my winters well enough to bloom much.

Sara-Ann - I can't believe it, but I was outside today and my Beverly actually had fragrance. This is the first time ever! I guess the bush is maturing!! The smell was wonderfully rosy!!! I love the smell of Buxom Beauty too.

Cynthia - your sniffer is definitely out of whack! Poor you!! And you don't like Perfume Delight - I find it really sweet. Francis Dubreuil looks amazing - wish I could smell it!

    Jadis aka Fragrant Memory

    Pink Peace

    Sombreuil

I love Pink Peace - although here it doesn't smell in the cool weather. Neither does Jadis (so far). You have picked some gorgeous roses!

I got Pink Peace bare root this season. Lovely colour, nice fragrance, but boy, mine is Mildew City! Is this rose known to be extremely vulnerable to fungal attacks, does it perhaps need a season to become more robust, or is mine just a total dud?

Laurie - I don't recall having any problems with this rose the first three seasons. it did great for me. However, this season, its fourth it hasn't done as well, but none of my roses have, so maybe I shouldn't be too critical. One of mine seems to be doing better now, I'm not sure the other will survive. It has been one of my favorites, but this year it just hasn't performed that well. Mildew hasn't been a problem for mine though, it did have blackspot early in the season though. When mine is good, it's very good, but when it isn't, it's frustrating!

That is really pretty, Sara-Ann. Mine hasn't bloomed that generously, but I still love the colour. Maybe I shouldn't give up on it just yet, though I am disheartened to see it having lost most of its foliage to mildew and blackspot.

Lauriescreams, mine has not bloomed that generously either. Wow, Sara-Ann - that's incredible!!! Man oh man, I wish mine was like that!! Sheesh!!! I can't remember if mine mildews. I can look outside at it tomorrow.

I thought the fragrance on rosa grandiflora 'strike it rich' was stunning.

still can't find one for sale :(

Thank you Laurie, I do hope you have success with Pink Peace, it is truly a beautiful and fragrant rose and hopefully it will do much better next season, I hope so. Carol, I hope yours blooms more too, you've had some pretty incredible roses yourself! Logan, Strike It Rich is lovely, didn't think about it being so fragrant. I noticed that Regan Roses has it on their website for next season, and I believe it's still available for ordering..

Logan..keep looking. I've got some (Paradise Found) that I really want to get again. Paradise Found is my avatar symbol on the left, and it's my favorite rose.

Sara-Ann - thanks! I'm going to try chicken poop (composted) next year. Maybe that will help.

I don't get much cold weather here, but these roses have scent all through the growing season:

    Cynthia

    Eiffel Tower

    Firefighter

    Century Two

    Sugar Moon

    Double Delight

    Sunset Celebration (light but consistent)

Sweet Afton ( that cursed rose )

That's a good number of well scented roses!! Do you have a picture of your Eiffel Tower? I'd love to see one. :)

I couldn't detect any fragrance during this extremely hot summer, but during spring and fall, my most fragrant are ...

    Abraham Darby

    Evelyn

    Winchester Cathedral

    Gertrude Jekyll

    First Crush

    Outta the Blue

    Milwaukee's Calatrava

    Darlow's Enigma

Once bloomers, before the scorching heat set in ...

    Ispahan

and, most fragrant of all ...

Apothecary's Rose, which some on this forum have said may be Duchess of Portland because it gave me a summer bloom. Whichever it is, it smells divine.

What a great thread! I'm getting more into fragrances and that's because I actually found a rose that has been consistently fragrant for me- Double Delight. Very sweet scent that is consistent and strong. Pink Peace is fragrant sometimes, usually when it is warmer- mostly a very light citrusy rose scent though. Mister Lincoln's damask scent can be intoxicating at times, but 80% of the time for me it's moderate at best, and sometimes I get absolutely nothing. Pope John Paul II always has a fragrance, but it's usually only a moderate scent.

Laurie, my Pink Peace never gets Powdery Mildew but a severe case of Rust has struck it every year. Every year is the same thing, it barely does anything after the rust infection in May which defoliates it right before the hot and dry summer. Various chemical sprays have not worked. Now that it's cooled down there is signs of new growth, it's a very good bloomer when it's healthy. Given these problems, I still wouldn't be without this rose though, it's the most rich and vivid sparkling pink I've seen in a rose, it glows and are very large! Here is a picture of it's first flush in April, and there it is today after rust defoliates it... hopefully it's ready to spring back to life for fall with the cooler weather.

Eiffel Tower is 5X4 for you! That's a big rose! I love the buds on it - very similar to the shape of Jadis - long and slender.

Flowersaremusic - You sure have a nice list of fragrant roses!! I looked up Milwaukee's Calatrava, and I love the look of it!

Dan - wow!! That's a bad case of rust! We just don't get that here. But, your Pink Peace when it's healthy looks sensational!!! Love it!! Unfortunately, here Pink Peace's fragrance doesn't come through in cooler weather. But I do love the fragrance - candy!!!

I'm about to throw in the towel in defeat for the season after repeated deer attacks--the beasts seem to prefer perfumed roses, I believe, because the perfume seems to shout out "hey, deer, there's something delicious over here!" If the roses only knew they were their own worst enemies. There are exceptions, of course, when a huge petal stuffed non smeller also becomes the deer's favorite (Caramel Antique).

The best smellers in my garden seem to be:

Frederic Mistral (offspring of The McCartney Rose--does that surprise you, Carol?)

Evelyn (the deer's A-1 favorite, blast them)

    Munstead Wood (deer ice cream)

    Augusta Luise

Brother Cadfael (blooms too high up for deer this time of year-hahaha)

    Young Lycidas (deer fudge)

    Angel Face (deer candy)

    Ebb Tide

    Eglantyne

The Prince (deer love this one)

and not bad in the perfume department-- (deer finally sampled this one yesterday, eating the entire bouquet off the end of a tall candelabra) Golden Celebration

    And others, primarily Austins

Deer Ice Cream!! Deer candy!! Deer Fudge!!! LOL!!

I would want to throw in the towel too if I had deer problem. It would be SO! frustrating!! You have my sympathies. :(

My Bro Cadfael isn't (at least in my yard) fragrant when it's cool outside. So far My MW has zero fragrance.

I think it's so interesting how some of us can smell the fragrance of a rose and some can't detect any fragrance of the same rose. For instance Logan can smell the fragrance of Strike it Rich and I cannot smell a darn thing from my SIR!

Nanadoll, I hear ya! My husband kept asking why I try to garden. There was nothing they wouldn't eat. I tried every home remedy known to man and every product on the market. Liquid Fence worked for awhile if I sprayed every other day, but by mid summer, they were used to it. This is my first year with deer fencing. We're rural, so it blends in among the trees pretty well, but I wouldn't care how it looked because of the difference it has made. I have a lot of roses, yet never saw a bloom on some bushes. This year has been thrilling to see the buds open. It may not work well in a neighborhood setting, but for anyone that's semi rural, it will save your sanity.

I'm so glad a fence worked out for you. I know it's the only way to go, but it's not possible here. We're a "village" development in the Boise foothills, so deer come down from higher elevations by the first of September. They leave in spring and don't do too much damage then. summers are pretty deer free. Fences aren't possible the way our lot is set up, plus there are rules about them, too. Fall is the pits, but I'll survive. Thanks for your sympathy. Diane

Roses that have been subjected to repeated nose diving:

    Firefighter

    Pretty Jessica

    Sonia Rykiel

    Mme. Isaac Periere

    Frederic Mistral

    Memorial Day

    Young Lycidas

    Golden Celebration

    Oklahoma

    William Morris

    Clementina Carbonieri

    Bolero

Stand outs in the lavender bed: Angel Face, Barbara Streisand, Fragrant Plum, Neptune.

boncrow - yes, that's interesting, isn't it. :) My husband can smell only the most fragrant of my roses, while my daughter smells rose scents that I can't smell.

Oh Dan! Rust is my worst fear and I see a little bit of it at the end of summer on Kardinal. I take all leaves off and spray with Lime Sulfur at double strength when I see rust as it can be very hard to defeat.

Diane and Lyn, I think we have similar noses and I agree with your selections.

Poor Diane, I didn't think you had much issues with deers before?

Thanks Carol, I love Pink Peace especially since the blooms seem to last forever in hot and incredible long in cool temperatures.

Fragrancenutter, Rust is indeed horrible, though downy mildew is the scariest in my opinion. Had to toss a Perfume Delight last winter as the Downy infected 80% of the plant, hopefully my new one won't get it again this winter- it was the only one of all my roses to get it which is scary since I consider Perfume Delight an indispensable rose for it's brilliant sweet fragrance. I've never tried Lime Sulfur, but I'll keep it in mind for next year.
