Perfect, I am sure they will be ok. Because my chili didn't appear I decided to do 4 other seeds.. coriander, bell pepper, basil and peas.. went a bit over the top, don t u think. And guess what, today I saw my chili is producing something.

If you think it took long to germinate, wait until it feels like *months* before green pods ripen! :)

Hey... guess who is excited??? After almost 3 weeks, something started to move.. my Chili is growing!!! First picture for you guys, I planted them into bigger pot on Friday, and put them under the LED lights : SANlight M30, and this is what happened.. they are moving fast. so my peas is doing really good so far. I must say it is the quickest one to germinate, and growth of them every day is bigger.. As I am growing them indoors, LED lighting system has a lot to do with it..

At the start I was very sceptical, but now i can see the benefits.

Is anyone else using LED system?

All you have to do is search for lumens/watt for each lamp type.

I am I am using an Apollo Horticulture full spectrum 300W

There are smart phone apps for measuring lumens. I don't know just how accurate the apps are, but even if they are just an estimate, you would be able to compare two different light sources to see which one is brighter.

Ok willardb3, could you give me more info on that, cause now i am using LED..But isn t lumens for the human eye??

Brennan, is that one ok for you, and what is the area that you cover?

It's been working great. I have it at 18 inches above the canopy and it covers a bout a 2X3 area at that height. A little more when hung higher.

Hi, I am located in Austria,moved here.. But I just wanted to try, and it started to look good.. so I am very impressed.

I kind of did the same thing last season. I started several plants in the early fall. These ended up producing just as much as the new 2016 plants, but did so a couple of months in advance. Mine only received natural light from an east-facing patio door and I trimmed them back because they were looking a bit sad in the middle of winter. Yours might fare better with supplemental lighting. Good luck!

I have continued to push back my start date every year for the past few seasons. I used to start some seeds in mid January but now, nothing gets started until at least mid February and I am targeting the last week of February this year.

Thanks a lot, for nice comments. I am doing this for the first time. But I figured because it is winter, I will do it indoor. with LED.. it s going good for now, I had insects inside, but bought some kind of powder for it.. I posted it on my blog.. so we shall see if it will help in long term.

I didn't know, there were insects inside the soil.. very surprised. I am sure it happend during the transport before it goes inside of a plastic bag.

Yes, it s used the same.. for whatever you like it has a strong but nice smell for me. And you can dry it and than use it as herbs. It is very curvy, i really struggled with it, when I want to put a tiny bit of water in, I need to be very careful as I can poor some on leaves (can t doo it, as I am using LED lights)

esox07 Coriander is popularly referred to as cilantro. I actually just found this out. I'm not sure if that is common knowledge where you live but down here it's just called cilantro and nothing else.

Emma, when you get the chance, put it outside. Sunlight with help the stems be stronger and it won't fall over on itself quite as easily.

I have heard of both but am very familiar with Cilantro. Cilantro is the perfect companion for tomatoes and peppers for nearly any recipe.

Sunlight yes and also the wind. Stems tend to grow only as strong as necessary and in the absents of wind and other stimuli, they don't grow very strong. But getting them plenty of light is also crutical, be it artificial or sun. With lack of light, they will try to grow taller to "reach" the light source which makes them tall and spindly. This is the case for peppers and most other plants such as your Cilantro.

When I start my peppers indoors, I run an oscillating fan on them a few hours each day while they are under lights. This helps not only with strengthening them, but also helps keep down mold and fungus and pests.

esox07 I hadn't thought about using a fan on seedlings. I'll be giving that a try this next season.

Brennan, do you think it is a good idea to put them out, as here is 0 degrees Celsius (and it gets colder,Below 0 )??.. so actually really cold. Also we have snow :)) and it s predicted in the following days.

The other thing is, I am having 6 plants inside one half a meter tent.. don t ask me how hehe.

Brennan: I run the fan about 4 hours a time a couple times a day. I have it on a timer like my lights. You could actually just run it on the same timer as the lights. And you should consider an Oscillating fan so that you get varying wind over the plants.

Your setup and your plants look pretty good. Just wait till they get a little bigger, they will start growing like CRAZY! . If you let us know what kind of lights you are using and exactly how close they are since it's hard to tell for sure in a picture we could probably better tell you if they are at a good distance. I also wouldn't worry too much about the lack of room, I've grown much bigger plants in about the same amount of space. As long as you keep the leaves pruned back so they are not fighting each other for light if they happen to get too much bigger while they are still in the tent I think your grow space should be just fine for a little while.

I have them at distance prox 30 cm from the plants. Only thing is my peas are growing fast.. and they are getting closer to the LEDs.

The only issue I see with the setup is size. A month from now, you are going to be in trouble. You definitely need a fan in there since it is all closed up.

If they get too big and you don't have any other lighting it might be possible to keep your lights running 24 hours and rotate your plants giving both sets 12/12 lighting. I'm not sure how well that would work but I've considered doing that for this next seasons seed starting to save me money on lighting.

esox07: what are your thoughts on rotating plants for 12/12 lighting? You know a lot more than I do about this stuff.

I do have to agree, I am in concern as the space is verz squeezed and I only have 2 lights. But to be honest I didn't expect all of these to grow.

So if I keep them running for 24 hrs it should be ok?

I can't say for sure as I haven't done it myself. I do know of quite a few people who have grown plants under constant light with no dark cycle so I would assume it would be fine, especially since LEDs give off almost no heat. My only concern is how much the 6 hours less of light will affect the plants growth. Hopefully one of the more seasoned growers on here will chime in with some advice.
