Replanting Irises in pots?

I am about to have some major landscaping done. I hate the ground cover under my trees but I love my irises. I am thinking that I should pot them before everything is scraped up and taken away. I do have some large pots. I am not much of a gardener, so how should I do this?
I am in zone 7.

What kind of iris are you trying to save? I'd pot them in potting soil, at the same level they are in the ground, keep slightly moist, but never so wet they might rot. Are you going to replant them this season when the landscaping is done? If so, you can even dig up clumps with soil around the roots, set them aside somewhere safe and plant again. Iris are pretty forgiving, but my experience is mostly with tall bearded types.

I live in Las Vegas, so my Iris leaves are burnt from the Sun. Can I cut them back?
