You didn't water it enough or something else has resulted in the top not getting enough water. Dig it back up and look at the roots, see if you can see any indications like the potting medium being all dried out.

And then re-plant either in an entire bed of organic soil either in the ground or on top of it. Or plant it in a tub of suitable acidic potting medium. Do not put it back into a small pocket only 2-3 times wider than the plant of organic soil surrounded by adobe (or whatever) - this doesn't work.

It needs complete shade from the sun until it gets a few new roots. Use a sheet above it or an umbrella.

And make sure the planting hole is not any deeper than the depth of the container. Even slightly less deep would be better. Azaleas and rhododendrons have extremely shallow root systems that resent being buried too deep.

Cooking of the roots by hot southern sun is one of those things that could prevent the top from getting enough water. Even here in the north rhododendrons and azaleas need a cool root zone.

I dug the plant up and checked the roots, they were moist to the touch but probably could have used a little more watering. I placed it back in the same hole but planted it slightly higher and placed a chair over it for now. I'll give it another week and see how it does. Thank you for all of your advice!!
