New Bertazzoni MW finally installed

I took this photo at this angle so that you can see how I had to add a strip of glass tile between the SS backsplash and the new MW. Here is the before photo:
The new MW came with the stove, which we had installed about a year ago, and the MW (since it was free) has been taking up space in the garage ever since. The installers who installed the stove did not install microwave ovens, and so we could not have it done together. The microwave should have gone it first, but as it was, we had to install the SS backsplash ourselves under the existing MW (which was only 1-1/2 years old), moving our old stove out and back in until the new one was installed. I knew the new MW was about 1-1/2" shorter than the old one, and so we left the old one in place for a years. However, about a month ago, the light went out, and it is not an easy matter to change the light bulb. The instruction manual says that a professional has to be called in to change it, and so I thought that as long as we were changing the light bulb, we might as well change the whole MW and get the new one out of the garage. We donated the old one to the installer, who said he needed one. He is envious of our stove because it has European safeguards making it childproof, and he has a mischievous 4-year-old daughter who is always turning on the gas on his stove. He says ours is much safer than his.

I do like the new MW better than the old one, and you really do not see the glass strip unless you view it from a certain angle, such as behind the peninsula. I like that the new MW does not have a handle on the door, giving it a sleeker look, and the number pad and most of the controls are hidden by the door. It is slightly smaller inside than the old one, but plenty large for my needs. Also, it is much quieter.

I haven't grouted the tile yet and will do that this week-end. I wasn't sure whether I should post this on the kitchen forum instead, but it seemed more like a design decision, despite the problem with the light bulb.

It looks great! I love your range. I was always curious how the Bertazonnis perform.

Very cool! Somehow the new microwave makes it all look like it belongs together. Well done!

Everything looks nice. We got a Bertazzoni induction range in stainless. The various colors they offer are great. We weren't prepared to commit to a color though. The oven is on the smaller side also.

Hi Lars, long time, no see! Your range is really gorgeous! I know you'll be turning out some wonderful meals from it (well I guess you already have been since you've had it for a year). The mw looks great also, sorry for the issues you had to deal with, but I'm happy for you that its all in the past and you can just enjoy your finished kitchen!

My brother wanted the red stove, and he paid for it with one of the bonuses he got from work (Sony is very generous). The red color is done at the Ferrari plant down the street from Bertazzoni, and DB said that since he could not afford a Ferrari, at least we could have a Ferrari red stove. I think the upcharge for color was $1000, but he thought it was worth it. We now also have a new red Kitchenaid mixer, a red Kitchenaid soda maker (much better than the old Sodastream version), and a refurbished red Vitamix blender, which I bought recently and like very much.

Here's how the old stove looked, before we added the SS backsplash

As you can see, it had a semi-backsplash attached to it, but the new stove does not, and so we needed a quick backsplash for the new stove before it was installed, and so we decided just to put up a sheet of SS for something quick. I had considered tile, but that was going to take too long, and I thought it would be too busy. I'm happy with the choice I made. I considered doing SS tile between the backsplash and the new MW, but I wasn't sure how I would cut them, and the glass was easy to cut. Besides, it really does not show that much.

Woodie, it's true I haven't seen you much lately, and I do not post on the Cooking forum much any more - it's not what it used to be. But here is a pizza I made on Monday

to show that the oven does okay for pizza, even though it only gets up to 500°. The pizza did not get as crisp on the bottom as I would have liked, but it still tasted very good. I included this photo also because it shows the arrangement of the burners; the front left has two separate burners with separate controls, and so it can be very hot with both on or a very low simmer with just the center one.

I do like the Bertazzoni induction range, and if I were going to go with induction, that would have been my choice, but I've tried induction and did not like it that much. I have an induction hot plate, and I use it with my pressure cooker but not with anything else. I love the performance of the range - the oven somewhat less because it will not get to 600°, but I often make pizza outdoors in the Big Green Egg, which will get hot enough to melt aluminum, as I found out. When we have pizza parties, I parbake the pizza dough at 400° indoors for about 5-10 minutes and then finish them with them with toppings in the BGE. Fortunately, I have four pizza screens. I used to have five, but one was an aluminum screen, and I forgot to use the pizza stone in the BGE.

It looks great! I'm not a fan of the look of the microwave, but I love the stove/oven. I'm curious what you think of the Bertazzoni for your baking needs. The Fridgidaire "Professional Series" oven we have in our kitchen annoys me because the calibration is off and I have to use a separate oven thermometer to see what's really going on in there. I've had my eye on the Bertazzoni for years because it's one of the few beautiful ranges that comes in a 30" size (and I love and don't want to change our counters to fit in a larger oven), but I've read that it has similar issues to the ones I have with our current oven. So while it's gorgeous, I'm not sure I want to spend money just for the looks. I used to want the yellow one, but now I'm liking the idea of the black one. I think they're all gorgeous :)

I always use an oven thermometer if I want to know the real temperature of the oven - I would prefer one that is digital, I think. I do not use the oven nearly as much as I use the cook top, and one complaint I have about the oven is that it vents air back into the room both top and bottom. It is only warm air - not hot - but if your kitchen is already hot (Mine is air conditioned), it might be uncomfortable. If you are not using the range while you are baking, it is not an issue.

For us, we did buy it largely for looks and did think it was worth it. Ideally, I would have a separate wall oven, but that is not an option in my current kitchen.

As far as looks go, I have not seen any over-the-range microwaves that I thought were that great looking - most look very cluttered, and I have not seen any door handles that I like, and so ones without door handles are preferable to me. Panasonic makes one that is not bad, but it is no better than what I have now.

Beautiful Bertazzoni and pizza, and love the story behind the color!
