A nice looking set of Violets ...

I am tempted to try the mat watering because I picked up a large plant shelf over the summer with 4 deep trays and lights. Seems like mat watering would be easy on them. I was kind of thinking I might set up one or two trays for my bog garden plants and then the remaining for violets or what have you, but we will see. The lights they came with are only T12's, so not super efficient and may drive my light bill higher than I care to deal with. Not sure they would provide enough light? Eventually I will upgrade them to T8's or T5's.

Makes sense,,,I may have tried it if I had a plant shelf. But since I don't it is easier to have the individual wick set up. But lucky you! And good luck! Rosie

It was a Craigslist find that was too good a deal to pass up, something like $30 for the shelf, trays, and two 4" ballasts with unused bulbs. Couldn't resist! I do not have anything on it yet, but come winter that may change.

Though, I do not think the nice couple who sold it to me believed for one second I was planning on using it for houseplants, hahaha! Probably should not have picked it up wearing a tye dye shirt. :D

It's taking me over a half an hour to water my plants now so I think it may be time for me to look into a wicking too! :)

I put all my violets on a tray and water that way. Not the greatest, especially if I end up with a diseased one at any point. I have over 100 plants total, watering is now a chore. Takes anywere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on which plants need what, etc. Wick watering would be a great way to cut down on things, especially now that my AV collection is growing.

Though, I have a shelf full of Hoyas above my AV shelf. It is almost handy having to move all the violets when I water, to save them from runoff when I water the Hoyas above them.

If I had a dollar for every time I got a violet leaf wet accidentally...
