That doesn't look like subcalva BS-1, IML 0229 or IML 404.

It looks more like a carnosa or one of the rounder leafed pubicalyx or a carnosa/pubicalyx hybrid.

Well that's just great....the photo of the flowers on Logee's web site are definitely subcalva, but I don't know where they got the photos---could be just a standard internet image....Thanks for the info....

I think it might be H. carnosa Dee's Big One (now re-named H. skinneriana)....I have a big plant of that and the leaves look identical to me....that plant does have umbels of pink flowers, but they're NOT subcalva and they smell like carnosa, not grape...I'll be in touch with Logee's customer service on Monday morning--their "subcalva" cost a little over $30 with the shipping and handling....grrrr....

Yup that plant looks totally different than mine. I wasnt aware there were 2 types of subcalva.

Yes--I think it's Ted Green that has both clones available (or did have at one time)....I haven't seen photos of the two though...anyone have pictures of both clones? Aurorawa?

I've never purchased from Logees but was thinking of trying them. Do you recommend them (after this experience)?

Well...yes and no....they do ship extremely large healthy plants---that "subcalva" has been wound around itself and the vine is actually 3-4' long; the plant is more than ready to go into a 4" pot....on the other hand, they are NOT hoya experts and, in fact, I don't think they even grow their own hoyas, but instead purchase them from a supplier...their real area of expertise is (or was) begonias; they've hybridized a lot of those and offer a huge array...I will say I've ordered hoyas from them several times before and never had a problem--the plant was always what they said it was....

I'll let you know when I've talked to them about this problem---how they handle it will tell me a lot...

Meanwhile, here's the "subcalva" next to my H. skinneriana--"subcalva" on the left and skinneriana on the right....I rest my case....

1. Update---I spoke to Logee's and they said that after looking at my photos their horticulturist confirmed they had sent me "the wrong variety" and they will be sending me a hew subcalva... They apologized for the mixup....We'll see what I actually get this time, but I think it was nice of them and they responded very promptly...Logee's has been in business for decades and has a generally good reputation, so in answer to Monica's question---yes, I would feel comfortable recommending them...by all means give them a try :-)

Shelley, I had the same sneaking suspicion that my subcalva from Logee's was indeed not subcalva. After doing a search, I found your post. Your experience inspired me to get in touch with Logee’s as well, so thank you for that!

I went through the same situation with having to have the horticulturist look at my photos. They offered me a different hoya or a store credit, so I had them send me H. danumensis as they did not have anymore subcalvas. I'm happy because it has a small penduncle, even if some of the leaves fell off.

I hope mine is skinneriana as the blooms are pretty awesome. Mine had a small peduncle but it dried up and fell off when I moved it into the garage during hurricane Matthew. Now I'm off to find subcalva somewhere.. :)

Tom--when did you get your "subcalva"? I'm wondering why Logee's, when they knew what they had was NOT subcalva, continued to advertise and ship it...unless you've had yours for awhile? Anyhow, yours does look like mine, but it's much bigger...be sure to post when it flowers! :-) I'm curious about what we have....the horticulturist could only tell me "some sort of carnosa"....

Shelley, I bought it this spring so I've had it for a while. I'm sure someone else told them before we did. If not, their horticulturalist knows it's not subcalva, so how did the mix up happen to begin with? I will definitely post when it flowers, it just put out some new growth, which I hope includes a peduncle. :) Be sure to post yours as well. And Logee's never did tell me what it might be, probably because I told them I think it's skinneriana.
