How about using two different drawer fronts?

On the same cabinet? I have a small galley kitchen and am thinking of using one material/ color on the top drawers and a different material/color on the bottom drawers. All my base cabs will be 3 drawered. This would create a " stripe" along the top.

Has anyone seen anything like this? I haven't, or I would post a picture. Would love to see some though. I'm thinking of using slab fronts, modern style.

This is the closest I have seen to what I think you are describing. I found it by searching for Mondrian kitchen.

I kept thinking that your description reminded me of a 50s kitchen, but all I could find was this:

which isn't right. So I tried 40s and that didn't help. I did, however, find many pink kitchens, some with green carpet, lots of very colorful linoleum (one was definitely an early circuit board design), and all the women wore stockings and heels. OMG. I'd forgotten about the aqua appliances. Those were kinda cool.

I rather like the one clr_ found. If you did that look of cabinetry with a top stripe, that could be very interesting. What sort of colors were you thinking about? I think this stripe would be the wow factor in your kitchen and everything else would need to be quiet.

I've seen Kitchens with slab drawers on top and non-slab drawers for the rest of the drawers, but not different color or materials b/w them.

Where did you get this idea from? It might give us some hints as to where to look for examples.

The first picture is nice for an ultra mod look. The second hurts my eyes.

I have seen kitchens mix stains or wood species. For example walnut and maple. They can look really nice when laid out well.

I came up with this idea in my own mind, haven't seen any such thing. I'm imagining a white top drawer, and then maybe stainless steel or dark grey or walnut bottom drawers, and perhaps drawer fronts wrapping on sides as end panels.
I'm picturing more of a "color blocked" effect than a Mondrian-ish look; very modern and floating with recessed toe kicks on sides too.

So much depends on the house this is in, the furnishings of the other rooms, but most importantly, the size and openness of the kitchen. My kitchen is 11 x 15, with three door openings and a huge bay window over the sink - that and the back door cover nearly all of that entire wall. In other words, my kitchen is very "choppy". This it the first time I've replaced cabinets in the 32 years I've lived here, but the 3rd redecoration, and each time I've gone simpler and simpler, and more and more neutral with few contrasts. That's the only thing that works with the choppiness. But if you have a huge kitchen with tons of light and space, the Mondrian-inspired paint on the cabinets would work. It would most definitely NOT work in a kitchen the size of mine!

I think it sounds nice, and so original since you can't find any pictures of something similar!

signet - Are you planning on the same height on all lower drawers? Otherwise, the stripe would be more zig zag.... Our kitchens functions well because the drawer stacks ARE different.

This is the 'bird's eye' view - each lower drawer is a different height.

From left to right: below ovens, shallow drawer for platters. Below microwave, drawer holding salad spinner and colander. Then, to left of cooktop - lowest drawer is tall (2 pasta pots). Not seen, to right of cooktop, baking sheet drawer. Then, baking center. I would suggest, if you haven't already, itemizing what you need to store and where it will live. Then, make the form over function decision(s) :)

I just wrote a response and don't know where it went... trying to watch football and type at same time... :(

Anyways, I will have a cabinet run similar to that Leicht island, with all drawers of same size, but on an exterior wall with no upper cabs. Im thinking of using IKEA cabs so maybe I will buy some different fronts and check it out.

I think the secret to good design is to get the function to fit the form.

I've seen wood stripe top and painted bottom recently. Will try to remember where.

saw them several times (on the Internet) and liked what I saw

I have a bit similar idea in my custom book shelves..wood plus two colors

I'd gladly go for it if I had a bigger kitchen in a totally different style house. I love this style

Couple pics I've been able to find..

If you are trying to get the long striped effect, you have to make sure that you have enough drawers in a row of the same height in order to accomplish it otherwise I think it will be wasted effort. So if the dishwasher or stove interrupt the row it's just not really gonna look that good.

practigal: paneled dishwashers can work, as long as connected drawer fronts are used for the panel.

I do think the OP has a modernist European style kitchen in mind, where fronts tend to be uniform, with drawers inside drawers keeping the look minimal yet functional as in Ikea's line. And yes, for a stripe to work, there needs to be a long uninterrupted stretch of cabs that's not hidden behind other cabinetry.
