You won't have that long a bloom period - for the most part, lilies are summer flowering bulbs. Asiatics tend to bloom in early summer and the orientals, trumpets and orienpets in mid to late summer. You might find a few species to extend that time frame but not by much.

I also would not have a dedicated lily bed. These look much better planted as accents rather than feature plants and the bed will be empty or at the very least, ragged looking, for a good part of the year. Better to mix them up with other perennials or small shrubs.

The only reason I would have a dedicated lily bed is if I were growing them for cut flowers. And then the bed would not be front and centric or very conspicuous but located in a less visible part of the garden.

Whatever you like :-) In zone 8 you are not exactly limited for selection!! My choice would be a mix of some smaller evergreen shrubs (dwarf abelia, escallonia, boxwood or Japanese holly; even some dwarf conifers) to provide some year round interest and then whatever flowering perennials you like to extend the bloom season, starting with those that bloom in early spring - bleeding heart, hellebores, columbine, brunnera, euphorbia, etc. - followed by more that bloom in summer and into fall. Most will take sun to part shade and pretty much all like the same conditions lily bulbs do - a very fertile and well-drained soil.

And don't forget to include spring flowering bulbs - crocus, snowdrops, daffs, hyacinths and tulips - to really extend the season!
