PVB BACKFLOW OPEN OR CLOSED DURING BLOWOUT?

Help! Should I be closing the 2 (Toro) PVB backflow when blowing out my sprinkler lines? I could swear that I usually keep the two handles in the open position...but then I read a post on Family Handyman where they said to close them. I tried both and for whatever reason, nothing is happening. I don't want to break anything! Usually, this is an easy peasy job every year. I do have a new compressor and wondering if this is the problem ALTHO I just used it to blow out my pool lines with no issues. It is defintely powerful enuf, it is slightly bigger than the one I used to use prior. Thank you!
