If you do cut them into smaller sections make sure you keep the stems oriented correctly (I'm assuming no leaves on these bare sections) - the bottom cuts go into the pot and the top cuts are in the air. When I do this I cut the bottom at an angle slightly below a node that has a growing tip and a horizontal cut above the node(s) that will be the top. This makes it easier to remember which end goes in the pot instead of poring over the node itself.

Another method is to lay them horizontally in a pan of potting mix or perlite if you are not sure about the orientation.
