Depends on your budget. The floors look fine and the cabinets look like they are in good shape, and I would keep the appliances unless they don't work well. Off the bat, I would change the countertops, update the chandelier, change the hardware on the cabinets, put in a new backsplash, and maybe refinish the island in a different color. Is that table attached to the island? Yowzer, I don't know what to do with that. Maybe change out the tabletop and base or at least make the base less conspicuous/smaller.

Great space. If the set up works for you, I would invest in new back splash and counter tops. I also think the room is lacking color, maybe find some colorful drapes for the large door area. The valance is dated and the drapes are too narrow. I would also find a new larger chandelier for over the table, something with some personality. Finally I would replace the dated chairs with something more stylish.The new chairs could have the same fabric as the new drapes or the same colors.

Also, I would change the table that's attached to the island into a rectangular shaped tabletop with a new complementary base.

Agree with KB...maybe make the island a different shape or a two level if u want to have seating there/and possibly a contrasting color on the island and/or different counter top than main ones. Is the table removable? If not a new top.

The table is attached to the island. And yes, I agree. something needs to be done about it. I'm not sure though if a rectangular shaped tabletop would work/fit because the door behind it is not a sliding door.
We are going to change the countertops as well as put in darker hardwood floors.

We are thinking about re-facing these cabinets. What style cabinets would you recommend? Also what color backsplash and paint would you recommend?

Need to know type of new countertops. Then coordinate those with backsplash..taking into account flooring and cabinet colors. After I knew those things, pick a paint color.

What specifically is not working for you in this kitchen? If you can identify the problems (as you see them), then Houzzers can be very specific as to what needs to be addressed.

You are basically changing the whole room so it is hard to comment. Is,the cabinets going to be white? Then you need to decide what general type of countertops do you want.

You have a nice wood floor. Do you like to keep the current look of painted cabinets (white) ? Or natural wood cabinets ? Some ideas --

I would paint and reface the cabinets, add barstools, some pendant lights above the island, and to remove the table at the end of the island a well. If your budget allows it maybe consider getting all new counters.

Btw when I said you should remove that table, you should get a new one. You can even at the new counters I recommended to the table.

bouts55- I thought about pendants over the island and taking out the chandelier. My only concern is having pendants over the cooktop. Its going to be a lot of work to try and keep them clean, no? Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Otherwise, I was thinking to just change the chandelier to something more modern.

ss - the contrast between the traditional / even cottage style of the cabinets contrasts heavily with the tambour modern base of the round element table. The table is very functional there, but clashes in style. Just change the base of this table when you redo countertops, change it to a pedestal that looks turned or take it out and put your own table in that area of the kitchen - more character and more versatile and it will come together with the other details. Spend $ on countertops, appliances, hardware, backsplash.
