It's a coleus, Plectranthus scutellarioides, and a very cold sensitive perennial, not a shrub. In Victorian times, it was a very popular houseplant but nowadays, most use these as summer color in a container or in the garden. You can take cuttings to grow indoors over winter - will root very easily in water - but ones left outdoors will start to deteriorate once temperatures drop below 50F.

The other two are the same species also - these come in a variety of colors and color combinations.

I just bring the entire pot in for many tender perennials like this. They will need cutting back at some point to keep them densely bushy.

NHBabs, to root them in water over winter, can you just leave the cuttings at room temperature in a sunny room, and change the water once in a while? I keep my house around 68F, no warmer.

BTW I guess you didn't get to see the rhodies at the Holden...per the other thread on that subject.

I love coleus! One of my favorite tropical plants! So many interesting varieties.

@Davidrt28 - I leave my coleus cuttings in water (in a relatively sunny spot by the French doors) for six weeks (mid Dec to mid Jan) and then pot them up. They take up less space in water than in individual pots so I inevitably procrastinate. Yeah, roots get torn when I separate them, but the plants do fine.

its used as an annual for many of us.... probably perennial down south and in its native area ...

it is not.. technically a shrub ... for what that is worth ....

I bring mine indoors for the winter. Keep them about 70 degrees or warmer, I prefer 75. Here is one of mine:

When they get leggy like this, just pinch them back so they don't hang over the container. I need to get a better pic of it.
