I grow Delicatas every year and decided to try Jester this year. Johnnys Seeds advertises these as "short-vined" and yielding 5-7 fruits per plant. In my garden they grew much like Acorn squashes do. They vines grew short, stout and upward forming a large, roundish bush about 4 feet wide with enormous leaves. Then the vines laid down and roamed outwards about twelve feet in each direction. I wouldn't call the vines short but they are not as long as other Delicatas.

The flowering was different. Only a few flowers early in the season and on only half the plants. Only considerably late in the season did a flush of flowers come on which set nicely... and then no more flowers until the first bunch were practically ripe. Then they set a whole new bunch which I mostly pulled off. The picture below shows most of the "first" crop from my four plants. I would say I got 10-12 solid quashes per plant, not including the second crop. The uniformity was surprisingly good as my Delicatas generally have various oddly shaped specimens here and there. These are bigger than standard Delicatas, the largest being almost football sized. There is also a noticeable pleating, not quite as much as an Acorn but way more than a standard Delicata.

The taste so far has been barely tolerable yet still better than my last year's Delicatas. This is a mysterious problem I'm facing in recent years and I would not blame the variety. In fact, they were better than my last crop of Delicatas but not as good as years previous to that. I don't know what's going on but I have declining quality in my Maximas as well. Different story for a different day.

In any case I plan to stick with them. The yield is not as large as other Delicatas but it's plenty good enough.
