What is wrong with my maple?

There is spot on the trunk of a lovely maple in my yard where the bark appears to "bubble up" away from the trunk. There does not appear toxbe any kind of visible bugs or larvae in the pock marks, but the wood is dark and discolored. I've attached pictures. Please let me know if you think you might know what has happened and if you think it can be saved. We did have lighting strike two months ago on another tree about 5

0 feet away. Not sure if it is related.

Since there is some rotting visible and the condition is ugly if the tree were mine I would have it removed.

Could have been caused by a variety of things, at an early age even. I highly doubt that it was caused recently by lightning or recently at all. Could've been guy wire damaged to the trunk at an early age. Wounds can be an avenue for disease and rot.

You have deep enough rot there that I would take it out, a heavy wind could cause it to break at that point and cause damage to anything nearby when it falls. At the very least have a certified arborist come out and look at it.
