Help! Ducting for Range Hood

last modified: 10 years ago

I need to spec the opening size and location for my future range hood.

My kitchen isn't fully designed yet, though I know where I want the stove. (See attached screenshot).

My problem is that my builder is using insulated concrete forms for the whole building, and you can't (easily) drill holes in concrete later!

Can anyone recommend what size hole, and location I might want/need?

I can't see your screen shot.

What kind of range do you envision, a 48" pro gas range, or a 30" electric cook top? Will you need Make-Up Air? The answers to these questions make a huge difference in the ducting. That said, You may want to plan for the minimum 8" ducts and MUA. I'm not sure there's a down side to planning for more and using less.

12" duct and as straight of a route as possible. MUA goes in elsewhere. Not the kitchen.

its a straight shot up the cabs and out an exterior wall.

Your hood needs to be higher off the surface than you have it currently. Those corbels are in the prohibited zone. It will take a custom stainless liner with lights and baffles or mesh. And there is no way that any stockpot will fit in a 33" lazy Susan. That takes a 36" one. The doors on a 33 are too small, and only suitable for canned goods and small small appliances.

MUA goes elsewhere but still needs ducting... which has to be accounted for at this stage as well. Is your only guidance here a kitchen designer?

I don't understand why the question for Makeup Air is being asked - the house has an HRV system with ducting elsewhere. This is solely for the range hood exhaust, because I'd likely to avoid those silly

Sophie, are you in Canada or the USA, the clearances may be a bit different. (I ask because I've had multiple kitchen designers look at it, I recall checking it myself against code previously, and it wasn't a problem). From a quick google search, it appears I require 30" of vertical clearance, and as drawn I have more than that.

Sophie, I'll go home and measure my stock pots. They are a few different sizes, but not huge. (I make 3 pots of soup at once, but in one of the smallest size stock pots they make). For a 33" cabinet it looks like at best ill have ~12.75" of clearance with the door open. I could probably shrink the adjacent cabs if necessary to get to 36", but I'm waiting to see how square the walls go up before I commit.

I know you didn't ask, but I would make the hood another 6" wider so it's 6" wider than the range. I think the scale would be better - plus, it's recommended that your hood be 6" wider than your range to help with steam/smoke/odor/fumes/etc. capture.

Regarding the "hole" - as Sophie mentioned, I'd oversize the hole a bit to accommodate any ducting needed. I would go with 13" or so. Some hoods specify a 12" duct, so 13" would give you some "wiggle room".

The makeup air topic was brought up b/c you will have to plan for that hole as well - assuming you need it. How powerful is your hood going to be? How well-sealed is your home (the better sealed, the greater the need for makeup air).

Hi Homepro! It is an electric range, not gas.
    Located in Canada.
Yes, we will have central vac. Mech systems are on the opposite end of the house, and the hvac contractor specs the size of holes for those systems.

Buehl, the hood is a kit based on common kitchen company specs, so Im comfortable with it as is. the actual hood might be a bit wider, as I think the corbels hide part of it, if i recall.

The home is ICF floor to ceiling, so very airtight. I also live in the cold cold north, so makeup air is a given. Since we wont have a gas hood, our needs for makeup air are considerably less.

Sophie - PS all my stockpots are 9-10" diameter (12-16qts) so I'm fine. It's a comfortable size to move/pour when full. ;)
