Need help with living room decoration

last modified: 9 years ago

Hello houzzers this is my first staging project, and kind of hesitated and little lost on what is next? We have bought this dark brown, offwhite, and blue sofa set, and wondering what is next out of those (curtains, rug, wall art, coffee table or TV table) and how to match colors.

thanks for awesome ideas

Here are white and black coffee tables:

Here is a black coffee table with your original pillows and teal curtains:
A more neutral version of the room, still with lots of color, but a bit calmer:
I would choose a coffee table that can be used by both sofas but that still has room to walk around to get to the chairs.

I love the second rug with the pillow, I love the pillow too. I think the plain white IKEA cabinet will tie in the chairs. I adore the flooring.

What's your next step going to be? Have you decided on a rug?

    @Linda

We like the second one most but unfortunately it's over priced for it's quality, so we eliminated it from options, also we couldn't find something similar to what groveraxle has suggested.
I am posting few more options:

This one contains gray, so we think of adding gray pillows over chairs and switch curtains to gray, there is another very similar one with less gray and more beige we think that would be better choice but unfortunately we didn't take it's photo.

We will add red standing light and pillows to match this one, but we feel it's busy with colors.

for TV unit yeah I agree Linda white is better choice, I think of making drawers front white with wood frame with white coffee table, will post design soon.

groveraxle how does choosing rug would affect curtains? so from new rug options which one would you choose and which color for curtain would be the best? is beige still the hero? appreciate your opinion.

The rug is going to fill more visual space than the pillows, and you already see that is is difficult to match one to your pillows. If you get stuck, try the pillows in the master bedroom with solid bed dressing in one of their colors. Should be easier to find. Be sure to hang your curtains like this...

@decoenthusiaste ty, it looks like we will be more serous about replacing those pillows with something matching our rug.

rod is going to be hidden behind Gibson board box, but still not sure if i need wall to wall curtains or as big as window

Marco, first let me commend you for taking your pillow covers with you when rug shopping. I wish everyone were this smart. As you are finding, those patterned pillows are throwing a bit of a wrench into the process.

Give me a few minutes and I will do my best to Photoshop the new rugs into your room. (Maybe more than a few minutes since I'll have to do some reconstruction on the rugs. And be aware that the lighting in the store will change how they look in your room.)

The curtain decision should wait till after the rug is chosen.

@groveraxle I really appreciate your effort, you have done a great job editing those, in the mean while I been searching for rugs in market (feeling sorry that I didn't utilize your effort), I found this one and I felt it's the one, we like it and it contains lots of colors from our pillow (beige, off-white, brown, blue, and yellow)

note: sofa will be pulled away from wall for one inch to make legs rest on rug

The sofa will look more grounded if you pull the front 1/3 of it onto the rug. Otherwise it looks like a fat lady who is afraid to step into the water! lol

Marco I love that rug with those pillows - well done : )

    What's next?

Nicely done on the rug, Marco. The colors are perfect and the abstract pattern is just right with the pillows.

Some iterations with coffee tables and curtains:

@decoenthusiaste doing so would leave width of 62 inches, while leaving legs on the floor exactly next to rug is 85 inches, I think 62 inches is small can we get something in between?!

@Linda ty you are always supportive :)
next is: coffee table + side table + TV Unit, and curtains, it seams to me no specific sequence should be followed, the only thing I am sure of is we are going to get IKEA besta TV unit

Big IKEA besta white doors + wood frame

    last modified: 9 years ago

small IKEA besta white doors + wood frame, I like this more but the bigger contains more storage!

@groveraxle I like creamy or blue curtains, but my fiancee likes honey let's see who will win ;)

If you want another vote, Marco, the blue curtains are my least favorite. You can almost never go wrong with natural linen curtains.

As to the Besta unit, I agree with you that the lower one is better looking, but if you need the storage for games and stuff, go with the larger one. It's better than having all that junk just laying out and about. Just make sure the unit is wider than the TV. I would get one no shorter than 60". Even longer would be better.

Besta unit is 70" long, I wish I could make it 86" but that would affect entrances.

Anyway TV width is 44" so 70" is fair.

I too prefer the bigger unit but I'm a neat freak, I don't like seeing wires or clutter.

I like the idea of some white in the coffee table as per the renderings above.

I have never liked a 'solid color' in curtains as i like to change pillows/accent pieces throughout the seasons. i agree a natural linen curtain would work best in your room : )

    more options for coffee table
    IKEA stockholm

I like the first one. The second ones have splayed out legs - a tripping hazard taking up space you don't need to lose.

    Marco Pacino thanked decoenthusiaste

I like the vittsjo table in white, very sleek!

I honestly don't think the unit needs to be that big for the size of room, it looks fine on a plan but unless you need it for storage space especially i would go slightly smaller. The other thing I'd think of is there enough space in the room for when you have a few friends around (for when choosing tv unit size).

    Marco Pacino thanked Linda

we bought the big stockholm IKEA table and 70" small Besta TV unit, the good thing about BESTA, if we needed more storage we can add more.

Hi, may you can install the decorative backwall on the backside of your sofa. :)

We been busy with wedding and honeymoon, now we are living here,I would appreciate your suggestions :)

I love what you have except for the original patterned pillows. I would like to see a photo without them in couches.
    Congratulations on your marriage!

Congratulations on the wedding, Marco. A couple of things about the room: the coffee table looks too far away to be used by the sofas. Move both of them in till they're 18" from the coffee table.

It may just be the way my monitor displays it, but I don't like the color of the sheers--they look dingy--but then, I don't like sheers anyway. I would replace them with some kind of shade. A woven wood shade would look more modern.

And then, of course, you need art over each of the sofas.
