Some of my annual poppies that self seeded earlier this year are now blooming. Unusual as we have still not had a hard frost and none expected this week.

Photos show opium poppies. Although illegal in the US since 1969 these are common here in the Seattle area also, were still on the local garden center market in recent years.

All of these are Papaver somniferum, as Embo said. It is very variable and self sown plants produce all sorts of colours and shapes. The seed pods too are very decorative, both growing and dried, and produce seed for baking. Do you use the seed in cooking Josh?

Oh yeah they are so good!!. Pods can be used in all kinds of crafts.

I lurk here sometimes and thank you for the reminder, that I need to order my odd poppy seeds that I have my eyes on. It is time or wait another year. Planting time in Texas is now to December.

I just got started planting last year. I want to get some poppies going. Any advice?

They can also be grown in pots. I usually go with 3 gallons & then thin them to the strongest two.

for fertilizers I use chicken manure & cow manure both available at Lowes. I prep & plant every fall.

I do want papaver somniferum!
