Give it a try. I planted seeds from fresh fig last year and I had 80-85% germination rate. The seedling fig trees grow faster than fruit bearing figs.

I have a 'volunteer' fig tree that has sprouted in my yard and it has grown as much or more than the nursery cultured fig trees I just bought. Best of luck!

I grafted a cutting from my fruit bearing fig on to my seedling fig this summer and it is growing now. Will post some pictures soon.

I never would think to try sprouting fig seeds since they are so easy to propagate by rooting. Do you tease out the seeds from the fig or spread the fig meat out on a wet paper towel or just plant the fig itself? I air layered a fig several years ago and it worked fabulously.

John, I washed the seeds first, dried them over night and planted them in soil. After few weeks I had lots of seedlings. Separated them after they were 4-5 inches tall.
