I would also add this: there is a transition period of about a couple of months when adeniums moving from regular potting soil to a grittier mix. During this period, adeniums need more water more often than it would normally do when it was growing in regular potting soil. As a benchmark, I water my adeniums every other day when I first move them from potting soil (as yearlings) to a version of gritty mix that is 7 parts bark, one part chicken grit and one part pumice.

Once established, adeniums can and do thrive with watering every two weeks. But the best part of this, for me, is that the plant gets accustomed to infrequent watering so that it doesn't bother them in winter even if they are actively growing.

To be more clear...... the soft adenium is STILL in the soil mix. Of all the caudex parts only this "root" is getting soft. That is why I believe that it may be rot. It is also in a clay pot with only one drain hole.

Pagan, on your two week watering cycle....... do you fertilize each time you water?

Ah, okie. It was not clear in the OP. In any case, it's still pretty warm there. You have time to dig it out and repot it, if you suspect root rot.

Also, yes, I fertilize every time I water adeniums because I water them so rarely--I do not always stick to the ideal schedule of every two weeks especially when it starts raining off and on. So by most standards, my adeniums are underfed and under-watered. They evolved to store water so I let them store it. Less trouble for me.

I got clear confirmation that I cannot use gritty here this summer.

I didn't water for 2 days during one really hot period, and cooked one of my smaller plants that was in a clay pot.

I do plan to add some additional bark to my recipe though.
